The joke is: "Let's give oldman pasta false hope".

I have had it every year, why stop now? I still have this team
for some historically bad numbers this season. The hitting is
weak to mediocre & the overall pitching is AAA quality.

That doesn't mean they can't surprise though. You never know.

There is one fanbase in this town who seemingly expects a huge turn around from a terrible season this year. It is not the Cub fans.

Ill make my official prediction later and Ill bold it for you so you dont try to use this thread as if it's reality.

For your benefit: I dont expect every prospect brought up. Probably 2 of the 5 that have been discussed. Maybe a third in september

You're mistaken or greatly exaggerating, RPB. I haven't seen anybody in the Sox section predicting playoffs. Most are saying anywhere from 75-82 wins which would be a nice improvement, but I certainly don't consider that a "huge turnaround." Maybe you think that would be a big turnaround because your team has lost 300 some games over the last three seasons. I think the fact that there is a legit chance that the Sox could be a .500 club, and that their future core (for the most part) will be playing games at the big league level this year are good things.

edit;
I just checked the Sox thread and the 'prediction' and the best somebody has said about them is that "I think they might get to .500."

I guess Im misreading Sox fans enthusiasm.

.500 club is gonna be within 5 games of the playoffs though...so not that far off

Yes, I think improving your win total by 18 games is pretty significant turnaround.

But Im sure if Cub fans were calling for a .500 season after losing 99 you'd have nothing to say.

The Cubs should have been .500 already and should be at the very least in contention for the WC now. The fact that they are considered even a mild threat for the division title should be very worrisome.

I think the enthusiasm comes from the moves Hahn has made over the last 8 months. He appears to have put together a solid core, and the Sox already have some decent starting pitching. Garcia should be the real deal, but we'll have to see if the Davidsons and Eatons, etc work out.

Edit; I also think the enthusiasm is because this is new for the Southside. The last time they had a solid core of young guys like this was probably what they got in return for the white flag trade, even more so than 2005 because those guys were veterans by that point. Even if they had Mike Trout type guys back in that trade, nobody gave a shit because all the fans were pissed off.

Im not sure where you are getting "should" from. Teams do what they do. But were not talking about the Cubs.

That's fine. I share their opinion on Hahn's off season, but if it were Cub fans predicting an 18 game improvement in one off season largely due to acquisitions of unproven players, you would be killing them for it. Would you not?

Which fanbase do you think has higher hopes for the 2014 season?

Probably the Sox, but even if it was started with tongue firmly in cheek, there is only one playoff baseball thread so far and its not in the Sox section

Dont bring me down Frank. March happiness is all I have as a Cub fan. I still have been crying most of the day from Phil reminding me about Hee Seop Choi... :(

OK. I will let dolphin know that is he correct in seeing that some Cubs fans think there is hope for a Wild Card, while Sox fans are hoping for a .500 club at best.

You are. For the first time in a while, there is reason for optimism. They should be better and younger. For years, the only reason for optimism was "Maybe our old guys who used to be good will be good".

Ah, so you're being purposely obtuse, now.

And you just contradicted your previous post

No one here actually thinks the Cubs are going to win the Wild Card Frank

But you think the Sox will be right in the wc mix coming off a 99 loss season

Yeah RPB, your team lost 288 games the last 3 years!!!! You guys suck!

Mine (and Franks team) only lost 260 games the last 3 years!

You guys suck because you are rebuilding and dont care if you lose.....OUR team kicks ass because we are 'retooling' and not trying to lose! We are going for it!

Its much better to spend $111 Mill and lose 99 games than, drop $92 mill and trade everyone to lose 96 games, because we don't REBUILD, we RETOOL!

You should easily have a WS team now in year 3! If you dont, they you suck again!

Any questions?

Its fine. Im sure we'll have an MLB predictions thread and Sox fans predictions will be much rosier than Cub fans and we can all just come back here and agree that I was always right.

The jealousy from Sox fans is overwhelming. I'm sorry Kenny didn't construct a Wild Card team like Saint Theo did. There's always next year boys.

A prospect is someone who hasnt proven it at the major league level. Youre not really going to cite the projections of guys who have done little to nothing in the majors now after mocking them for the last two years, are you?

I guess we'll see in the prediction thread.

I will commend you for dicussing this normally and not being conned by a joking thread like your Sox fan bretheren

I'm saying when the guys are at the major league level it is ok to be excited for what they might do. That is really simple. If the Cubs have players who show up on the MLB roster this year then go crazy. If you have some guy in AA that's going to be great in 2018 then do not go crazy.

I don't necessarily expect them to win 81 games. I think they have a chance to, but I gave them a window of 77-81 wins. That isn't all that good of a team.

The biggest difference is that most of the future Cubs core is still playing in the minor leagues. Last year what Rizzo was doing in Des Moines was getting more coverage than what the Cubs were doing. That should be mocked.

The future Sox core will be playing at the big league level. Why shouldn't fans get excited to see those guys live?

Im good with being excited about anyone. Im a positive guy.

77-81 is right in the Wild Card mix. Not a great team, but in the playoff picture.

"in the mix" is exactly where the Sox were the last few years Ozzie was here. Just good enough to maybe, possibly make a run at the postseason, but not bad enough to be written off. Its not a good place to be.
