I wouldn't say it will be Bitcoin in its current form, but I have little doubt that crypto-currency is the future of monetary systems. Power to the people! The Internet is the most important development in the history of mankind. More important than the Gutenberg press. And you thought this shit was just for surfing porn and bashing bernstein.

I think the system is holding on by its chinny chin chin (No asian joke intended) and anyone that might sell it short, well they might find themselves "underground"

Remember when the big thing about it was that it couldnt be traced? WELL WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT MONEY NOT BEING TRACEABLE? Its not the Boy Scouts!

So, if you work in a field that can influence the price of these mythical coins, someone might ask for your help or to not do something.

Either way...........I AM OUT

Agree, it might be a EURONET, but it will be backed by a Government or GOOGLEBUCKS

Googlebucks!

I think part of the appeal is that no government has a hand in it. It's not tied to the fortunes of any particular country. Google is too heavily invested in the Establishment to fuck with the existing paradigm/world currencies. Hell, they'll hand over your e-mail to a dictator without even being pressed much.

I don't really see us walking into Chicago Cut and paying our bill with Bitcoins in the near future, but then, twenty-five years ago I couldn't have imagined having this conversation with you guys in this forum.

The real market for Bitcoin- or something like it- is in rural parts of developing nations.

A friend of mine runs a hedge fund and he is a disciple of Peter Schiff. I figured he would love Bitcoin, or at least the concept. he didn't really know shit about it.

As soon as I heard that one of the great points about it, was that it cant be traced? Great....and then the Drug cartels said "GREAT!" lol and if you want to be trading currency with a drug cartel (ALLEGED!) to not pay your taxes? I will wait till the trail of dead people stop showing up

The lady that killed herself was CEO of a small upstart coin trading exchange. The Mt Gox issue is what you should really be concerned about. Millions of dollars in coins just vanished??? There are still exchanges out there though and the selling price is still around $600

It's funny that there's significant overlap between the collapse-porn people who are obsessed with buying "physical metals" to prepare for the inevitable financial apocalypse and the people who buy Bitcoins. The global economy is going to fail! Get me silver and imaginary internet money!

In theory, every bitcoin has a serial number and therefore should either be found eventually or never be put back into circulation. The whole thing makes my brain hurt.

This is a few months old but seeing this thread made me think of this story...I'm guessing this guy is rooting for them to tank...

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/11/29/man-throws-away-7500-bitcoins-now-worth-7-5-million/

A British man says he threw out a hard drive that had 7,500 bitcoins on it, worth over $7.5 million as of Wednesday.

James Howells of Wales purchased the suddenly skyrocketing Internet currency for almost nothing back in 2009.

He says he likely threw out the hard drive sometime over the summer, and only recently remembered what was on it.

“You know when you put something in the [trash], and in your head, say to yourself ‘that’s a bad idea’? I really did have that,” Howells, who works in IT, told the Guardian.

It's an digital currency that can be exchanged online and in some cases in person. While it's sort of a wait and see what happens with it the concept is intriguing. If you think about paying with bitcoin at a Target store for example. A crook can steal your Visa card number, but he can't steal your money if you pay in cash. Bitcoin is like another version of cash that is more complicated. Stores would like to be able to accept payments without a middle man charging swipe fees. I think it is still somewhat in its infancy, but either bitcoin or some other e-currency is going to catch on. However, it may take a few years. Even though bitcoin is somewhat confusing now, it could make it easier to spend money than PayPal. When it becomes easier to convert bitcoin or similar e-currency to cash and when retailers take e-currency it will really catch on.

Where did Shark go? He was one of my favorite posters on here by far. Super informative. I think one time he said he liked Chicago Tonight, which I feel is the best program talking about the city of Chicago on local TV.

It's not very easy to suggest a number 2. Number 2 probably has to be a local newscast. But really Chicago Tonight is unique in that it's less about soundbites and more about conversations about the city and its policies. It is a unique program that doesn't really have any similar comparable program because there are hardly any commercials and it has a non-traditional format.

One thing that was suggested is that the use of bitcoin could be a way for people to cheaply purchase articles online. Typically because of swipe fees you don't have people purchasing things for fractions of a penny. For example if spammers were required to pay a penny or a fraction of a penny for every e-mail they send they probably wouldn't do it. Because the 500,000 people they e-mail with spam is going to cost them a lot of money.
