Rachel Canning, 18, sued her parents after claiming they kicked her out of their home last year. Her mom, Elizabeth, and dad, Sean, a former police chief, said their daughter left home because she didn’t want to follow house rules.

Only 18 and acting this way? Take her parents out back behind the courthouse and shoot them.

You failed, parents. No, you don't have to pay her child support and tuition. But--very sorry--we're going to need to kill you both as an example/warning to other parents not to coddle their kids into adult monsters.

You could probably get their daughter to pull the trigger if you pointed out to her that she'd inherit all their shit once they're both dead.

Quote:
COX: Is this idea that the brains of 18 year olds aren't fully developed a matter of settled science?

AAMODT: Yes. The car rental companies got to it first, but neuroscientists have caught up and brain scans show clearly that the brain is not fully finished developing until about age 25.

COX: To not be too clinical in the spin that we put on this, what parts of the brain are we talking about and what changes happen between the ages of 18 and, let's say, 25?

AAMODT: So the changes that happen between 18 and 25 are a continuation of the process that starts around puberty, and 18 year olds are about halfway through that process. Their prefrontal cortex is not yet fully developed. That's the part of the brain that helps you to inhibit impulses and to plan and organize your behavior to reach a goal.

And the other part of the brain that is different in adolescence is that the brain's reward system becomes highly active right around the time of puberty and then gradually goes back to an adult level, which it reaches around age 25 and that makes adolescents and young adults more interested in entering uncertain situations to seek out and try to find whether there might be a possibility of gaining something from those situations

yeah fuck this dumb bitch up her stupid fucking ass. i don't think that anywhere in the great american social contract it's stated that your parents owe you a college education.... i mean yeah it's generally a perk of the middle class existence, but part and parcel to all of that is not being a cumb dunt enough to piss off your parents into helping you avoid all kinds of costly student loans en route to "the american dream."

fortunately for the parents the judge seemed to relish their time in the spotlight to start going on and on about precedents.... and i mean if the chick is 17 or something then there's child support and all that i could see them on teh hook for.... but 18? yeah bitch you wanna be all grown up and tell your parents to go screw themselves welp you're gonna find out who the real screwdriver in the family is (PROTIP: it's not you)

Given the recent spate of scientists yammering on about how our adolescent brains (in most individuals) are only about half-way matured by age 18, perhaps cases like this will cause legislators to reconsider age 18 as a mostly blanket 'age of majority'. 21 was the age of majority throughout the United States until the early 1970's:

Quote:
Prior to 1970 the age of majority was 21 years in most of the States. The exceptions were Kentucky where the age was 18, Alaska where it was 19 and Hawaii where it was 20. In Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah the age of majority was 21 years for males and 18 for females.

The 26th Amendment (which lowered the voting age to 18 throughout the U.S as a reward for 18 year-olds fighting and dying in Nam) inspired pretty much all states to drop the age of majority to 18, with a few exceptions. 19 is still the age of majoirty today, in 2014, in IA, MT, NE. 20 still in Hawaii. And Mississippi, probably just rebellious back then and deciding not to follow the federal government's lead, still regards 21 as the general age of majority, with exceptions carved out for things like adult criminal culpability (gee, i wonder why they do that).

18 year-olds universally got the vote in 1971 (many states already allowed 18+ voting) and immediately went out in 1972 and did this:

Image

21 is still the age of majority in Illinois and other states for certain uses, especially beneficial transfers under estates and trusts laws. Illinois' 'Uniform Transfers to Minors Act' uses 21 as the age of majority for some transfers.

Interesting that Illinois had a bifurcated age of majority ( 21 for men, 18 for women ) until 1975 (I believe) when it dropped to 18 for everyone,

Quote:
COX: Is there a difference between males and females with regard to their brain development, particularly in this age category?

AAMODT: Females' brains develop about on average two years earlier than male brains, so you're more likely to have a late developing male brain than female.

I know 2 people who had much much smaller issues with their daughters and DCFS got involved. I know both guys very well and these 2 would never do anything to their kids, anyones kids, or to anyone...its just the kids found out about what DCFS is, got the number and called. Both guys got cleared of anything, but it created a complete shit storm for both of them and now they both live in fear of their daughters. Neither daughter is older than 12 and the claims were so ridiculous, not even going to state them here as it didnt matter, but DCFS ran right out within 24 hours and really went after both of them.

One guy when you go to his house now he says 'Now, remember, be nice to ______ .

How do you even parent a kid after that? Your kid has total control over you.

I see you hatin'.

I see reddit memes a bloomin'.

She should do what all other attractive-enough 18 year old girls do these days, get an account on chaturbate.com and take it all off for $$$.

It's not the pole parents of teenage daughters have to worry about these days, it's the ubiquitous web cam.

Quote:
Canning has slung mud on Sean and Elizabeth Canning’s parenting skills, blaming them for her bulimia and alleging that her father was perverted.

Rachel Canning said in court documents that the father, who was described “inappropriately affectionate,” woke her up at 2:00 a.m. for beer pong games and force-fed her drinks.

Her bulimia stemmed from her abusive mother calling her “fat” and “porky.”

^^Mom sounds jelly.

wait, we have warring pedo dads:
Quote:
Elizabeth Canning said the family of John Inglesino, who took Rachel in last October and has been bankrolling the unusual lawsuit, has been enabling the teen’s wild ways.

"She would often tell us how the Inglesino parents would allow alcoholic parties to be held at their house,” the mom said in court documents. “Mrs. Inglesino gave all the girls wine coolers to drink

Neighbor dude is even footing the bill for the lawsuit. The ownage here is brutal.

"Yeah, Sean, your hot-enough 18 year old daughter's been at my house for the last 6 months and I'm helping her sue your ass."

Quote:
Canning is staying with her best friend, whose father, attorney John Inglesino, is paying for the lawsuit, which has cost $12,000 so far.

That's her in the middle of the 2 blondes, and that's her dad standing up talking to her? Dayum, he is so fucking owned.

Wonder if he's asking her if she wants to play some more late night beer pong.

The quality of pro-am girls who take their clothes off on the internet has improved by orders upon orders of magnitude in just the last eight years. I never truly believed internet porn was addictive until r/gonewild came about. Now, even the real top-shelf suburban girls are putting stuff up their asses for the world's approval.

It's 2014, some mainstream film(s) must've done the father in the man-cave logging on to a cam site and running across his daughter in her bedroom in the same house putting on a web cam show.

We've crossed the rubicon now where it's more likely a parent will chime in on their daughter's chaturbate session to ask her to clean up her room when she's done double-dildoing-her-ass on cam than be George C Scott destroyed by the spectacle.

why? hes a former police chief. im sure he has control issues, but the main problem was he didnt like her boyfriend. its not surprising there was friction. little Caller Bob should have just moved out and let her "man" take care of her if she didnt want to listen to her parents.

^^^that applies when one of the parents is dead? Don't let Rachel Canning see that

A situation where courts do not hesitate to award the level of child-support dollars and tuition payments (and more!) that this girl is looking for (even after the age of majority) is when the parents are DIVORCED.

Maybe Rachel saw her friends with divorced parents swimming in cash and clothes and cars and college and cocaine (all ordered and monitored and enforced by the Family Court judge and Friend of the Court) and was disappointed that her parents were still together; and so she had to abide by their rules to get coke money from them instead of a family court judge shaking down her dad and/or mom for money whenever Rachel asked for it:

Quote:
Rachel drove a wedge between the parents — at one point she even tried to make an online dating profile for the dad while he was still married, according to court documents.

Looks like this might end up a test case for expanding the requirement to pay for college to non-divorced parents. Currently only divorced parents can be legally compelled to foot the bill for college:

Quote:
Family law experts in New Jersey say Canning's case might set legal parameters on whether non-divorced parents in the state are obligated to pay for their children's college education and provide other financial support after the child has left home.

New Jersey is one of several states that require divorced parents to pay for their children's education through college, or legal emancipation, said William Laufer, a family law expert in New Jersey. So far, there is no parallel decision for intact families.

Family law and especially this case are just a giant barrel of contradictions. Add in new things like you can stay on your parents insurance until 26 is all a fucking mess. So your kid can decide fuck you I am 18 and will not do a damn thing you say and can go vote, join military and move out and do whatever I want. But should they decide to move to a campus and be some sort of deadbeat until 26 you pay and have no control. What the hell is wrong with things these days?

Next up your kid demands to be a doctor. You drive a bus. They get to go through med school and your retirement goes to having to pay their student loans.

So far, they can only shake you down for money after 18 if you get divorced.

This case could expand the requirement that parents pay for college for their of age children to non-divorced parents, for New Jersey. The rest of the country could follow suit.

The problem I see with this is the court would basically be saying every family with a college age child has to be vetted and their finances monitored by a court. That seems a bridge-too-far, in an age of limited government resources and increasing concerns about privacy and government overreach.

Perhaps it would simply create a cause-of-action a child of non-divorced parents could wield at their leisure. Still, then the parents have to hire a lawyer and likely the court would require the child have representation and since the whole point of the proceeding is the child doesn't have money likely the parents have to pay for the kid's lawyer as well...by the time they go through this process, they'd spend as much on lawyers as they'd have spent on college.

Whereas divorced parents are already in the system and so forcing them to pay for their kids after age 18 is just a continuation of an on-going process.

Hard to see the courts forcing non-divorced parents to pay up without some supporting action from the legislature, too invasive of the intact family and too costly overall.

Yeah, you get divorced, you get fucked (unfortunately); but that shouldn't transfer back to intact families.

At the end of the day, however, this girl is really only asking to have the same rights/privileges a child of divorce has. Not only in terms of finances, but also in terms of rules/curfew. Imagine her parents were divorced and living in separate houses and the "custodial" parent tried to set a curfew or interfere with whom she dated? She'd simply bug out to the other parent's house and claim mom/dad was being mean to them. And then ping-pong back and forth as needed.

Perceived fairness issues aside, not a good idea to let the conditions of divorced families dictate the behavior and conduct of intact families.

fuck all of that shit. kids deserve to be raised healthy, thats about it. she obviously had decent parents, look at her. to require parents to pay for college is an absolute joke. they already paid for 18 years of school, food, clothing, shelter.. at some point you have to allow the parents to have their life back.

21 is still the age of majority in Illinois and other states for certain uses, especially beneficial transfers under estates and trusts laws. Illinois' 'Uniform Transfers to Minors Act' uses 21 as the age of majority for some transfers.

Interesting that Illinois had a bifurcated age of majority ( 21 for men, 18 for women ) until 1975 (I believe) when it dropped to 18 for everyone,

COX: Is there a difference between males and females with regard to their brain development, particularly in this age category?

AAMODT: Females' brains develop about on average two years earlier than male brains, so you're more likely to have a late developing male brain than female.

Do you have a link to the mature brain stuff? I'd like to read about that.
