The Philadelphia Phillies recently got a lot richer.

Last month the MLB team inked a $5 billion, 25-year local television deal with Comcast CMCSA -0.96% SportsNet Philadelphia–half the value of the cable deal comes from annual rights fees that will average $100 million and the remainder comes from the estimated cash the Phillies will get from their 25% stake in the regional sports network and right to sell advertising on the channel–that begins with the 2016 season.

Scott Milleisen, who heads the sports group at JPMorgan Private Banking, believes the new local television deals agreed to by the Los Angeles Dodgers with Time Warner Cable TWC -1.08%, and the Phillies with Comcast, provide guidance on how much the Chicago Cubs will get from their next local television package. The Dodgers, who occupy baseball’s second-largest market, have a $8.35 billion, 25 year deal beginning this season, compared with Philadelphia, in baseball’s fourth-biggest market, $5 billion agreement. The Cubs–nestled in the third-largest television market–happen to fit right between the Dodgers and Phillies. The challenge for the Cubs is that their television deals with WGN and Comcast SportsNet Chicago, of which they own 25%, expire at different times. The WGN deal is over after this season but the CSN Chicago agreement doesn’t run its course until after the 2019 season. See what Milleison thinks the Cubs could get as he chats with Bob Lorenz and I on the YES Network’s Forbes SportsMoney show below.

Pretty sure Gordon Wittenmyer will claim they'll still be in debt after that.

They almost certainly would be.

I continue to get a sinking feeling that Gordon will be right in the end, and everyone else with a mouthpiece will be wrong.

The Cubs will only get 1.5 billion for 25 years, and Bruuuuuuuce will go on a 25 minute monologue about why that was the right thing to do.

Long before Gordon wrote his first article about Rickett's, I posted here my opinion that the Rickett's cant afford to own the Cubs & that the financial profile of the deal just didn't add up. If the Cubs don't win soon, the dump at Clark & Addison will be half empty & the Rickett's will have no choice other that to sell the team. I hope this doesn't happen...but if it does, every MLB owner shares a little of the blame for not allowing Marc Cuban into their club.

What the hell are you talking about? They won't sell the Cubs. Baseball ownership is very lucrative right now.

The guaranteed gate that Rickett's thought he bought isn't such a sure thing anymore. If Joe Rickett's knew then what we all know now, he would have told little Tommy to drop the idea of buying the Cubs. Not much has gone right for Tom Rickett's financially, organizationally, or managerially since buying the team.

Ricketts is attempting to pour 500 million bucks into a Wrigley renovation. They're fine.

Perhaps you missed it, but there has been a lot written about Ricketts financial issues & the $580 Million dollars in debt that Sam Zell forced on Ricketts.

Great points on Ricketts being broke and the Cubs future on and off the filed not being very envious to most mlb teams.
I also believe that hating the NBA makes you racist and Pat Quinn should get 4 more years in office.

He's not broke, but if you understand finances at all, the Ricketts Cubs deal was good for Zell & bad for Ricketts...& it has gotten worse since Cubs fans are no longer willing to embrace lovable losers & go to Wrigley Field just because its Wrigley.
Wittenberg is 100% correct...but I had this before he did.
