I didn't think he ever really thought that, but he sure wondered about it. Remember, he's the only other guy who knows he assassinated LeDoux.

That's what I mean. He seemed uneasy when he saw the pics of Rust at the 2012 crime scene

every mystery show is littered with red herrings. that's not what i'm talking about when i say it's straight forward. it's thematically straight forward. it's actually unfolded kind of predictably so far--which is fine, because this isn't a show that's designed by crazy twists. and i think if you're looking for one in the finale, you're going to be disappointed.

The True Detective finally pre game party has started. I've cracked my first beer. Starting now is the perfect time for this show. Can't be too drunk too drunk while watching this thing. Otherwise you miss shit.

Seems like everybody said it's going to be nearly impossible for True Detective to stick the landing tonight, but I feel the opposite. It's been such a great series so far that it would have to be an incredibly stupid ending in order for me to change my opinion that it's been the best thing on TV the past couple months.

I think the great way to write these shows is backwards. Figure out the great ending first. Then fit in the lead up.

Here's why I think it's gonna be great. Cuz it was only 8 episodes. It's OVER. No second season. Not like a 7 or 10 season show where they don't know the ending when they start cuz they don't know if their show will make it.

Yes, it has been that strong a show. Make it a solid and reasonable ending and let it stand.

Not sure if this was mentioned but Hart's "Im just a regular type dude....with a big ass dick" is a nod to Bunk on The Wire right?

I think I was too.

It's hard to ignore the crazy number of red herrings that ultimately went to waste, and some of the loose ends that went untied... but overall, the show was some of the best character story-telling ever.

Absolutely agree. On the edge of my sofa for the entire scene at Erroll's house/Carcosa.

Looking forward to next season already, rumor has Denzel starring.

I liked it. Though I'm sure America will bitch about it.

Yeah, the enire thing wasn't solved but this show was never about the case. It was about Rust and Marty, their relationship and their lives.

Pretty much agree. I'm not really that annoyed by the loose ends though. The characters and the dialogue made the show much greater than just some police procedural. To compare it to NYPD Blue and CSI is just silly.

That one shot of Rust in his hospital bed all beaten up looked exactly how we've seen Jesus depicted after his stations of the cross.

Rust hinted in the first episode that he was Jesus. An atheists Jesus, but Jesus nonetheless.

The one loose end/scene that somewhat bothers me is the very first one in the series. With the fields lit ablaze and the shadowy figure looking like it was carrying somebody. Did we ever figure out what that was? What am I missing? It's the very first scene in the entire series, it's gotta have a purpose.

I don't think the finale lived up to the rest of the series.

I didn't feel like this was a traditional buddy cop series but that's what it was I guess.

Because it wasn't. It was whatever it was.

I agree with the Doc. This was a promising series that didn't really deliver in the end. Cohle and Hart turned into Riggs and Murtaugh in the last 55 minutes.

That's how I see it. I really don't feel like it was conventional or fit exactly into any one type of genre or subgenre. It was an interesting and entertaining show that was better than 95% of the other stuff I've seen on TV recently. Good enough for me.

I don't know what that means. They solved the big case and are on to whatever big case comes next.

I don't see how you can have Cohle survive. There was very little consequence/payoff to what was setup.

Somewhat predictable. And hollow.

Now I can cancel HBO.

Not really. Saying they turned into Lethal Weapon characters is pretty stupid.

But again, it is whatever you want it to be.

I thought it was a fine episode and did a good job ending the show as a whole. Rust and Marty changed it a bit over the years, it happens.

No stupid twist ending, thank God. Like Marty said, they got theirs and ending up solving the Dory Lange case. That was the whole point.

That's exactly what happened. That was the the background. Consequence was they may have died and the killer continues to kill, the payoff was they catch the killer.

Rust's words early on makes you realize why the entire thing wasn't solved. He told the black detectives, "We live in a world where nothing is solved."

We can argue about this all night long, but if you really think that solving the Lange case was supposed to be the point all along, I have to believe we watched different shows.
