Yeah, when planes just disappear off of the face of the earth and there is nothing left(so far) that is just hard to comprehend.

Quote:
Details concerning the sudden, Saturday disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 continue to trickle in. Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia's Civil Aviation Authority, said the missing Boeing 777 carrying 227 passengers an "unprecedented mystery."

In short: We have no idea where the plane is, where the passengers are, or if they're even alive.

Here's what we do know: The flight disappeared on Friday night/Saturday morning en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The plane was at cruising altitude (35,000 feet) and weather was more or less clear. Air traffic controllers in Vietnam say contact with the crew disappeared about 120 nautical miles east of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu, and radar signals suggest the plane may have turned around before losing contact.

And yet, nearly three whole days later, there are still no signs of the jet or its passengers. And an oil slick spotted in the South China sea originally thought to be a clue turned out to be a false lead

Adding another wrinkle to the case, the Wall Street Journal reports that airliners "such as the Malaysian jet also carry emergency beacons to transmit the aircraft's location in the event of a mishap so that rescue teams can reach the site."

These beacons, called emergency locator devices, are activated by impact on land or water, along with other emergency communications equipment. Malaysia's aviation regulator said no signals were received from flight MH370's beacon.
"There are many theories that have been said in the media," Rahman said during a press conference. "Many experts around the world have contributed their expertise and knowledge about what could happen, what happened....We are puzzled as well."

Naturally, conspiracy theories are already flying left and right on social media. One theory suggests the plane's sudden disappearance is a "false flag" operation intentionally planted by CNN. Another claims that some relatives of the passengers onboard have even reported hearing their phones ring--but no one is answering.

Other tin foilers have gone so far as to suggest that the plane simply vanished. "If we never find the debris," writes one skeptic, "it means some entirely new, mysterious and powerful force is at work on our planet which can pluck airplanes out of the sky without leaving behind even a shred of evidence."

Another, just as bizarre conspiracy theory suggests terrorists hijacked the plane, and have parked the plane intact in an abandoned hanger to use as "a weapon of mass destruction" in the future

Sadly, I think the obvious answer is that there were a decent enough amount of explosives to blow the plane to smithereens.

With a plane that big would there not have to be some type of debris that would fall from the sky?

Not to get in to this, but 9/11 is pretty much the only time in history where planes have crashed and there wasn't large pieces of debris. So yes, the chances of it being pulverized beyond recognition is low.

Yes, I would think you would at least have the fuel on the surface or something. Just thinking that it has to be something that blew it to such small pieces that they either sunk or are so scattered that you can't make out a match from an aerial.

And the chances of the PA plane "crashing" are also low.

I think they have shown on maps that the last contact with the plane was over water. I don't think it landed somewhere for future use. I'm wondering if it somehow just plunged in the ocean at full force and sunk.

I don't think there is any way a plane that big traveling that fast could just plunge into the water and sink. It would explode and there would be debris everywhere.

The USS Kidd created that oil slick to get some more time in the huddle.

Ed Pinckney got a ship named after him. Good for him.

If a plane of this size (pretty large) turns off all communications, are there other worldwide systems (GPS satellite, etc.) that typically keep track of all flights? I'm assuming not, or we'd know where this plane went.

My guess is terrorism. And it would be an effective terrorist strategy...making people believe they or their loved ones could just vanish without a trace.

My guess is someone hijacked and crashed the plane because the person in front of them reclined their seat...

This was a redeye flight, so a few people probably reclined their seats and the plane just vaporized because of their apparent rudeness.

I don't understand why in this day and age of push-button phones and the cotton gin, we can't create a "black box" that continuously transmits information to a satellite to relay that information to some centralized base collecting flight information so Jacques Cousteau doesn't have to get involved.

Plus, I think it takes even longer now since I'm pretty sure Jacques Cousteau is dead.

They should get the FBI involved in this. They'd have already found the purported stolen passports in mint condition along with typed, double-spaced confessions from the hijackers.

What a weird way for J.J. Abrams to announce a Lost reboot.

(Really, I just thought there were not enough lost jokes in this thread).

Instead of sending warships for a search,I think some nations submarines would be put to use.

Agreed. That was my initial thought as well.

Do we have any word on how many TV series level hot chicks were on board?

I don't think subs work really well for SAR.
