My best friend lives in the Philly suburbs. He recognized Babe Heffron standing outside Geno's a few years ago, struck up a conversation with him, and ended up becoming friends with him (like, "hanging out in Babe's living room listening to old war stories" friends). Apparently he and Guarnere kept in touch, and were breaking each other's balls right up until the end. Those guys were a rare breed. RIP.

They used to do tours of the WW2 battlefields. I think they even have a few scheduled for this year. Sad to see all this generation going away. Same thing kinda happened to me. I was working the counter at The Old Hollywood Video on Harlem and Archer. Old guy came in he came to the counter I noticed he had a airborne pin on so I asked what division he served with and thanked him for his service. Turned out he was in the 82nd and made all three combat jumps the division did and was a pathfinder. He started to come in every week and we would talk. I love military history plus I wanted to know what it was like to be a double volunteer(Para and Pathfinder). He was giving me all his newsletters and the stories where awesome. I wish the preservation project was started years earlier so more could have been saved. If you do not know what a pathfinder is they jumped in about two hours before the rest of the guys and set up various beacons to help the landings. That is insane

Little prick would not have lasted back then. Plus I hate to say it as a Jew he would have been in line for an oven seat if it was not for guys like this. I bet none of you know that some of the right wingers Like The heads of the banks tried to do a coup in 1936 I think.Only thing that stoped them was a 1 star Marine General by the name of Smedly Butler. Look it up and see what kinda guts some guys have.

to be honest from what I have read about it,they saw through Roosevelts "neutrality" and social engineering for what it was. They saw a war coming in Europe and wanted no part of it and saw the FDR was going to jump in as fast as he could. Just think we almost did not go to war with Germany. How different the world might have been then?
