If Mac plays patty cake and doesn't go for the kill it will be another letdown.

Biggie and I were on it at the same time. Use the master's thread. I'll repeat myself here.

Mac will mock him. Bernstein will look down at Mac as a simpleton and patronize him. Mac will bite his tongue and change the subject. That's my prediction.

from pruned thread:

About an article Bernstein wrote today about a new metric for baseball or something like that. Tune if to tranny to see if it escalates. Probably won't. Bernstein will counter Mac mocking him by simply patronizing him in typical Bernstein fashion. That's how it goes with Mac and Bernstein often times.

It's kind of amazing that Dan, as an erstwhile play-by-play announcer, would say that major league broadcasters ought to talk extensively about "route effectiveness" at the expense of, you know, broadcasting well.

Is Mac taking those pathetic potshots again? Way to be edgy. A catfight with a Woody Allen persona sports radio host. Bernstein wang-whipped you years ago. You're punch drunk. Go back to cottage and celebrate Canada's gold medal.

He has until June 15th to deliver the haymaker. The ultimate win for Mac though would be moving to afternoons on The Game & kicking Bernsies ass once again in the ratings.

One of the reasons I like Spiegel is that we have the same baseball sensibility, that there needs to be a balance between the human and the analytic.

Berns admits he knows nothing about math. Not surprising from an English major. But he'll still browbeat people with stats he doesn't even understand.

We need to combine Mac with somebody else to actually create the perfect adversary to Bernstein. Mac is good with insults but comes up short with logic.

That being said, I appreciate that he and Spiegel are really the only two at the station that don't fear and/or worship Bernstein.

It's absolutely fine if you aren't a fan of the advanced metrics and statistics.

It's absolutely not fine if you try to pretend it's because you're smarter than the quantifiable facts they offer.

I have no idea why someone would want to be willfully and actively ignorant of facts, but if you want to be that way that's terrific for you. That doesn't mean those of us who think they just might have a serious interest in this new and likely better way to examine the game of baseball have to somehow feel reticent about saying so because of your inferiority complex brought to bear by objective data trumping subjective opinion.

Sure I want to watch a 4-6-3, I want to watch a curveball snap about 2.5 feet in front of the plate, I want to watch a homerun fly into the next county ... but I also don't want to shelter myself from having my own opinions challenged and corrected with information based on exactly what I have watched just now, or yesterday, or the day before, or the season before, etc.

Like I said, I have no idea why someone would want to be willfully and actively ignorant of facts - other than, perhaps, they're afraid of being shown to be not nearly the sage they pretend they are .... which in a way is a little funny because it's entirely possible that these new metrics they decry might well, in fact, show they were right (or at least on to something), albeit perhaps for entirely different reasons. In no way do I think that will happen, but thankfully I'm not so foolish as to dismiss it out of hand before that theory has been tested with this new way of examining it.

Yes! How could any average person relate to most Score hosts? They're all so condescending and would prefer attacking callers and praising athletes and management. It should be the other way. This is where I think THE GAME could find its identity but they won't do it with by hiring softballs like Kaplan, McDoink, Harry, Spike, etc.

BernStine is the guy who lauds foreign films even though he doesn't speak the language. If pressed what will be so great about the new information (limited to 3 stadiums this season), he will be hard pressed to explain it to the casual fan. Reminds me of when I first explained fantasy football to my father, his response: "So you think it will help you when you gamble?"

Funniest part of transition was when Mac asked Terry what he thought. What a comical 10 seconds of "I, uh, uh, I, uh, uh" that JORR couldn't have scripted better. Terry torn between having an answer and being able to answer, his conditioned parrot responses for one Dan and the expectant response from another Dan. Too bad for Terry that he's become Bernstine's intellectual bitch.

Well, I don't like the stupid callers either. Problem with the Score is much of the staff consists of stupid people. Drinky is the stereotypical "Meatball caller".

Remember when these guys laughed at callers who suggested that the Bears would not be able to afford both Cutler and McCown.

Ha ha ha they mocked.

Another "Josh McCown sucks but we don't want to say he sucks but yeah he sucks" show I see.

Don't pay attention to the fact that multiple teams would be happy to have him with a chance to compete for the starting job. He sucks because he was bad many years ago.

The Score is Chicago radio's largest collection of dogs walking on their hind legs.

These guys are so dumb. They are saying that the McCown thing could only happen in Chicago. Yeah, I'm sure that the interest in Josh McCown by many other teams is because Chicago fans are stupid.

It means Bernstein and the corpse next to him are intellectually dishonest here; Mccown outperforming Cutler goes against everything they think they understand about Cutler's abilities and the superiority of his pedigree when compared against his backup. They're just too proud or rigid (especially Terry) to concede it.

Agreed.

It's also a way for more undeserved praise of Trestman.

The strange thing going on here that McCown being an actual decent player would make Cutler look better too. You'd hope that a guy who performed as good or better than the "franchise quarterback" wasn't a bum.

they signed jordan palmer a day ago... is that just posturing to get a more team friendly deal with mccown?? or a sign that mccown is gone and palmer will serve as the #2?

Giants` Qb Battle Rages On
Simms-hostetler Rotation Possible
August 07, 1991|By Don Pierson, Chicago Tribune.

2
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — There is no doubt in Dave Duerson`s mind that the New York Giants will know exactly how to handle the unprecedented problem of two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks on the same team.

``I guarantee you there`s going to be a rotation,`` said the former Bears safety.

Whether New York fans would approve of seeing both Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler this season appears doubtful. They booed their own good fortune when they hooted Simms and cheered Hostetler during the Giants` first exhibition game Monday night.

For the first time, a team has two quarterbacks who have won a Super Bowl apiece, and that`s not good enough for Giants fans. They want only one, and if their reacton against the Buffalo Bills is the barometer, it`s Hostetler.

Teammates decried the bad manners and defended both quarterbacks. Duerson surmised new coach Ray Handley already has a rotation plan in mind. Handley had no comment, saying his decision will be based on a three-week evaluation. Simms and Hostetler showed the pressure is already getting to both when they ducked the media after the 23-17 victory.

``I think the fans were a little bit cruel to Phil at times,`` halfback Ottis Anderson said. ``I just wish they wouldn`t be as brutal to him and hope they won`t be in the future.``

``That`s New York,`` Duerson said. ``The fans turn on you so quick. They do the same thing in Chicago. Ask T-zak (former Bears quarterback Mike Tomczak). I was very happy for him that he got out of there.``

Hostetler won the statistical matchup by completing 10 of 13 passes for 146 yards. Simms completed 6 of 11 for 46 yards. Neither threw a touchdown pass. A Hostetler fumble led to Buffalo`s first touchdown.

Simms, who started, did not get the ovation reserved for Hostetler`s entry in the second quarter and was booed when he overthrew the end zone on his final attempt. Handley explained: ``We wanted to get the ball to Stephen Baker. We expected blitz and they zoned us. We didn`t give (Simms) enough options.``

Such details were of no interest to Giants fans who believe Hostetler`s more nimble and relatively unused 30-year-old legs will prove more productive than the limbs of Simms. The veteran will turn 36 this season and got virtually no welcome back Monday for playing his first game since Dec. 15 of last season against the Bills on the same field. That`s when Simms went down with a foot injury after leading the Giants to an 11-2 record.

Former coach Bill Parcells had suggested using Hostetler in certain situations last season until Simms responded by getting the team off to a 10-0 start.

``Those things are quickly forgotten in this business,`` Anderson said.

``Everybody looks back and wants Hostetler to play. With what he showed in the playoffs, fans have a way of jumping on the bandwagon. Hopefully, everything will work out for both of them.``

Duerson said he believes neither quarterback will be riding the bench much.

``Regardless as to who the starter is, I imagine Ray already has it worked out in his mind how he`s going to go about rotating the two of them,`` Duerson said.

``He`s got two guys who can carry this team, so why not give them both an opportunity? It`s like having two ace pitchers.``

Duerson said the combination of Hostetler and Simms would drive defenses crazy because they are so different.

``With Phil, you probably would want to blitz the pocket,`` Duerson said. ``With Hoss, you can`t blitz the pocket. They would have to have two guys on contain on the outside because he`s liable to take off.

``You would have to prepare two game plans not knowing who is going to start at quarterback.``

A rotation would likely magnify the quarterback controversy rather than defuse it. In 1971, Dallas coach Tom Landry rotated Roger Staubach and Craig Morton on every other play in a game against the Bears. After the Bears won, Landry went with Staubach and the Cowboys won the rest of their games, including the Super Bowl.

Despite an extraordinary career as the most productive quarterback in Giants history and a record 22-of-25 passing performance in Super Bowl XXI, Simms never has captured the imagination of New York. Monday night`s unwelcome home made Duerson think of Tomczak`s trials with the Bears last year.

``If nothing else, you always want to have the ability to go home,``

Duerson said. ``With T-zak, he was getting booed by his hometown. It`s like you`re on an island when you see the whole crowd act like that, so I was real pleased he could leave.``

The Simms-Hostetler derby doesn`t seem to be bothering the rest of the Giants.

``I pay no attention,`` said linebacker Lawrence Taylor. ``It`s not my job. The quarterback thing is for you guys in the press to write about. Whoever starts will be the best man.``

``It`s been downplayed inside,`` Duerson said. ``We`re all competing at every position.``
