Bernstein using the "Points scored argument" to say Cutler was better than McCown. Don't get me wrong, I want Cutler over McCown. Why does Cutler get credit for Forte TDS or defensive scores?

Just look at the QB play, dumb ass Bernstein, instead of using bullshit numbers that fit your narrative.

If you prorated McCown's numbers over a full 16 game season, it would have been like 45 TDs to 6 picks. With a QB ratings over 100. That's by far better than Cutler numbers penciled out over a 16 game season. I think Cutler would have been like 33 TDs to 20 picks, with a rating in the low 90s or something like that.

"Get ready for a terrible free agent class" - Bernstein

I love when he shows his ass. This is actually a very good class. No matter how hard he tries to be smart he's an idiot.

Maybe he just meant the Bears free agent class.

I guarantee you Cutler would get more than 2 years $8MM or whatever McCown will get on the open market.

I think Adam Hog just set the record for most times saying the word "However" in a 7 minute time span.

Plus this guy talks without really knowing anything.

Example: "I can't see the Bears not taking a D-lineman with their first round pick, however they might take a safety."

Plus the "war room" he's in is just him sitting by a computer tweeting out the info that he reads from other reporter's tweets.

I love that Adam Hog has crossed into Leary/Leery territory of never being called by his real name here. Way to go, Grobber.

Right. That's all he's doing. Probably watching ESPN and the NFL network too.

Oh my God. Bernstein actually suggested that Briggs might compete for his job with Shea? You kidding me? Wow.

Yes, he was fat when he came back, but before he got hurt, Briggs was having the best season of his career. And it's safe to say Briggs won't be fat to start next season.

Isn't that hilarious? Bernstein telling Zack that Brad Briggs broke a Bears signing. Can Zack ever break one for the Score?

Zack wanted to jump in to say he heard they wanted so and so before Bernstein said Biggs got it.

ZZ keeps saying the REAL DIFFERENCE MAKERS will have to come in the draft. What are the fucking odds of that happening? Look at the history of the draft. Yeah, they ought to get a REAL DIFFERENCE MAKER in the first round, but after that it is a total crapshoot.

The football experts they have on are brutal. Hog, ZZ, Hub, and Bowen are awful. All their thoughts suck, and B&B can't wait to blow them all.

well yeah. a handful do it. Luck or skill? Even so, even on these teams, do low-round picks start immediately or does it take time?

Well, the Bears are picking at 14 this year. Have been in the 20s most of the last 10 years.

You can get an impact defensive player. Especially when you consider that it's projected that 8 of the top 13 picks will be offense, at least.

So the Bears will be getting a top 5 college defensive player. Either a top 2 safety or a top 3 defensive lineman. He better be an impact player.

Right. Bottom line, Bears should be able to get a "Wang-Whipper". He'll be there when the Bears are picking. They either pick the wang-whipper or the average player.

I have no idea who the player is as I don't follow college football or the draft shit. I just know the wang whipper will be there.

Did Adam Hog discuss how these signings impact his schlock draft where everyone is available at every spot?

Good call comes in.

Bernstine cuts it off. This caller got a good lick in - insisting the Bears draft defense.

Bernstine was stuck, so the nuke button got hit.

"Hog" is how it was spelled on the Score website Sunday.

But I don't think anyone really does that. Sure, people take issue with things like WAR. But that's because within its formula someone has placed subjective values on components while claiming the end result is objective.

I really think what it comes down to is that for the vast majority of people, sports are simple entertainment. Most of us don't want to come home after working a spreadsheet all day and start working another one while we watch a baseball game.

As far as a guy like Hawk Harrelson is concerned, I don't think anyone really takes most of the shit he says seriously. It's just color. Flavor. I don't actually believe Mickey Mantle had the "second best knuckleball ever". Maybe he did, but it's really irrelevant. It's just something to say between pitches. And you know what? It's a damn site more interesting than analyzing the shitty route Alejandro DeAza just took to a ball.

Kirkwood said it simply and well in another thread: "He (bernstein) doesn’t understand the announcer/fan dynamic. Most fans don’t want to listen to a computer."

The announcer/fan dynamic shouldn't be underestimated. bigfan is constantly talking about how your announcers are the frontmen for your team. They're promoters. They have the ability to make a connection with the fans that no one else in the organization can. And that's absolutely correct. That's why Harry Caray has a statue in front of that ballpark when he never threw a pitch or batted a ball. And he didn't get that statue by breaking down numbers that only a tiny fraction of fans have much interest in.

That's what irritated me about Bernstine going on about how he doesn't do math, but he finds these metrics so informative. WAR and a lot of the other "metrics" involve subjectively applied values similar to how quarterback ratings are computed. How can you be so devoted to numbers when you have no understanding of how those numbers are arrived at? Also, some of Bernsie's "advanced" metrics just involve applying a catchy name to stuff baseball people have been aware of for decades: WHIP reflects a relationship that's so obvious it might not really need acronym. Pitchers who allow a lot of baserunners create problems for themselves and their teams today just like in 1914.

of course. most sabrmetrics is common sense. once in a while there will be something groundbreaking. these new defensive measures should be.

For it to be groundbreaking it would have to tell you something that you didn't already know. If the analysis shows that DeAza generally takes more efficient routes to balls than say, Adam Jones, are you going to say DeAza is an elite outfielder? Or are you going to question the methodology? There are advanced defensive metrics that show Alfonso Soriano in his early Cub seasons to have been one of the best defensive leftfielders in the game. Most fans laugh at such an idea and spout the conventional wisdom that he "got better" late in his career. So all the advanced metric has really achieved for the common fan is to change the argument. Instead of arguing about whether Soriano sucks we're now arguing about whether the stat that says he doesn't sucks.

THis is being blown way out of proportion. You'll probably see these things once or twice a game. It will be one of those "Oh, neat" moments and then you'll go on watching baseball as you always have
