Dear (lipidquadcab),

We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing. The annual rate will be $99 when your membership renews on October 29, 2014.

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

For more information about your Prime membership, visit our Prime membership page.

Sincerely,

The Amazon Prime Team

This had been talked about for a while...never like paying more for products/services I use but it's still a good deal, provided you buy enough stuff from them.

I buy so much stuff, it still makes sense and I don't even use the video. Still a huge Amazon fan.

One thing I saw this AM, if you order a gift of Prime right now, you can send it to yourself and cash in on it when your current subscription expires (you'd have to cancel yours first). Seems like it would work, but I haven't done it yet.

Any idea whether the selection of movies/TV shows that Amazon offers as part of the Prime package is better than that available on Netflix? I've been thinking of doing Prime, mostly for the shipping but also in part because I was hoping they have movies that Netflix's streaming service doesn't. My gut feeling, however, is that there is probably 99% overlap and the same studio licensing issues are affecting both equally.

I have Prime but not Netflix. Prime movies/tv is underwhelming, and as a stand alone service I would never sign up for it.

A lot of overlap...not a lot on there movie wise worth watching...mostly the same for TV (but it has a few seasons of Good Eats, so there's that).

Yeah this is why we didn't renew. My wife wanted it for the TV stuff and free shipping, but didn't really like the video selection and we don't order stuff online enough to justify the cost.

Yes, it appears that Netflix is the king of streaming.

The only bonus to to Amazon is that you can cheaply order the movies/tv shows thru the video service. They dont have a great selection of free titles like Netflix does.

Amazon is pretty expensive when doing the Video-On-Demand service. And the prices of new movies is outrageous.

Maybe I'm wrong. I thought my wife got a season of a show for like $1 an episode... seemed reasonable to me but she could have been lying so I wouldnt get pissed off

Most shows I see on there are $1.99/each, and they upcharge you an extra dollar or two if you want HD. Fuck that.

$99 is still a steal for people like my mom who almost never buys anything from a brick and mortar store, let alone anywhere online besides amazon. she has got to the point where 'if you cant buy it from amazon, i dont need it'.

Amazon is a very popular website that sells a lot more than just books.
