only at the end of his run.

In his Monsters days he was asking Pat Riley to shave his head and telling Mike Mc Caskey what a weenie he is. He also had parties for listeners AT HIS HOUSE (think about that for a second).

Yup. North was always good with his listeners. I remember going to remotes & North would stick around for hours after the broadcast was over & hang out with fans. His Family would also be there, Bebe & the Sisters & all. He really was a great guy.

I think Mac to the new WGNG or whatever is a done deal. I don't think Finfer/McKnight jump to WGNG otherwise. Mac likely
conveyed his roster requests to his future employer and they are proceeding to fill-out that roster, as tactfully as they can.

I guess he didn't request Meat?

Spiegel is under contract and just re-upped a while ago.

I KNOW THAT.

I was just sayin', Mac had to have known something was going down at WGN a while ago and made appropriate moves concerning personnel etc.

IF Meat wants to stick with Mac it was probably bad timing for his contact renewal. Maybe Meat wants to go his own way? Maybe Mac would like a new partner?

Only the Shadow knows!

The timing just didn't work out. Spiegs has a young child (that eats his own shit); he couldn't have left the Score and twiddled his thumbs for however many months until Merlin sold 101.1 to Cumulus which allowed Cumulus to move 87.7's format to 101.1 and open 87.7 for WGN to lease. Lots of moving parts there. As you can see, this Game launch wasn't really planned much.

Other than Allen Brothers steaks, I don't think so. I would say it'd be fun to hear Mac dress-down Meat once Mac's over on the Game--however, for a NWI guy or anyone, Mac keeps it top-shelf and above board. No silent passive aggressive pot-shots at other hosts during updates. Mac will punch you in the nose if he has a problem with you, verbally, usually, sometimes physically. Mac knows transition's coming up and yet he doesn't shy away from mocking B&B. Seems to relish it these days and sounds disappointed that Bernstein pre-emptively folds anytime we're expecting tranny fireworks.

If Mac continues to go after Berns, what are the chances that Mitch pulls Mac off the air before his contract is up in June?

All day long with Irsay in the updates. Why does anyone care? Why do they do that with stupid national crap in updates that no one here cares about?

I really soured on North at the end but I would take him in a heartbeat over Bernstein.

Let's not romanticize what North became. He was intolerable at the end. The Mike North Morning Show was as detrimental to the station as anything Bernstein has done.

I would guess that when people say they miss North they miss the "Monsters" North.

Much as I hate to go against Scorehead and his incredible rate of accuracy in predicting programming events, I wonder if it's a done deal yet. The Game is on FM which means a lot smaller signal coverage and potential audience even if it has saturation coverage of the city. Are they going to be able to get the ad revenue to go after big name talent (even with today's lower on-air salaries) and get anybody and everybody they want? Or is that even a concern in the industry anymore? Can anybody with actual radio biz experience slap me down on this question, please?

Where's Shark when I finally need him?

It's relative, though. While North was race-baiting and vowel-shifting, B&B were running T.B. Diddler's skits and bantering with Joe in Evanston. Now that Bernstein's turned the station into his personal fiefdom, we get the worst of both worlds: eugenics and sabermetrics in equal measure. Given the choice between a hot-dog vendor who's too dumb not to be a racist billionaire-slurper and a poseur who takes great pains to sheathe what's essentially Neoliberalism Gone Wild in five-dollar words and Gladwellian pseudoscience, I think the latter is infinitely more socially corrosive.

Wait until they discover Mexican tuna. It's on the bottom shelves, because Mexicans are apparently very tiny, and it's so good. Jalapenos and "sweet and spicy" tuna. Love it.

I would be in New York, Philly, and D.C. and saw Mike North as a guest in each market, when they wanted a "Chicago" take it was North that they went to. North was getting national attention for his stupid shit but at least he was getting attention. Thus instead of WSCR becoming an extended Coppock snore fest the station had a pulse, some juice, and the daily unknown element that is/was appealing.

North went to New York to get his contract which put him in 7-figures, as the saying goes a rising tide lifts all ships and North helped lift everybody's salary.

Had North not gotten the big head and become Frankenstein, the Heavy Fuel Crew quite probably would have remained intact. A question Mac has never answered is what role he thought Terry played by not saying "No" to the change of partners. An intact Heavy Fuel Crew and Bernstein might have remained likable by being all of the the things many of use to like about him.

Having heard North in other markets I'd say that he's learned a little humility but like art deco designs from the 50s, what was once cool is clearly dated.

What do we want our sports talk hosts to be? We don't want Pappy or Murph, we've turned on Bernstein (though he kinda turned on us), and there's still a lot of sniping here over how Mac does Guy Talk instead of sports talk. The next generation pretty much seems to be Bernstein clones. So what's the ideal?

Dave's right. Listening to dumb people trying to sound smart is coma-inducing and makes you question if maybe you actually died that time you almost got in a car accident and are now in a state of purgatory being punished for your transgressions on the earthly plane.

Its simple: Be entertaining.

Mac said the other day, and that's the bottom line. Nobody cares how "smart" it sounds if it isn't entertaining.

I like the Mac or Spiegs (without the diva attitude) types. I just need to be entertained. They do the best mix of sports minutiae, meatball and guy talk. To me they're themselves and don't play bits.

Bernstein has morphed into part bit part legit bad guy. Fuck him.

Sincerity would be a start. Mac is the best at this and I also think Boers is sincere. And I don't mean telling the audience about the time you shit yourself walking the dog. Just be genuine. Less snark and sarcasm would be nice. Those are easy. Anyone can stand back and pick shit apart. Less pissyness. Less tales of male domestication (mostly a Bernstein thing). Stop belittling every caller. Speak truth to power and stop kissing the ass of the owners.

Three man weave, like the Mac, Jurko and Harry show. Spiegel would be tolerable in a Tony Reali capactity--dropping stats and other info--as an adjunct to a 2 or 3 man main booth.
