Sincerity would be a start. Mac is the best at this and I also think Boers is sincere. And I don't mean telling the audience about the time you shit yourself walking the dog. Just be genuine. Less snark and sarcasm would be nice. Those are easy. Anyone can stand back and pick shit apart. Less pissyness. Less tales of male domestication (mostly a Bernstein thing). Stop belittling every caller. Speak truth to power and stop kissing the ass of the owners.

Three man weave, like the Mac, Jurko and Harry show. Spiegel would be tolerable in a Tony Reali capactity--dropping stats and other info--as an adjunct to a 2 or 3 man main booth.

It really shouldn't be a rocket science test or a tougher question like vaccines vs. autism but we know what a good host should be. On one end you have meatball crazy gone bad North. The other end is Bernsie gone off the rails. The answer really is the middle and for me that is Mac.

What happened?

Bernsie was sharing how he wanted the NCAA to crack down on coaches who were out of control on the sidelines. They should not be allowed out of their box and should not be able to talk to the refs during the actual game but only when they asked permission during the timeouts.

Kinda have to agree with Dan. Groce is a clown. How many ejections does he have so far? It can't be enough.

Interesting take after watching a documentary last night about how coaches running the sidelines like lunatics made the Big East.

There's running along the sidelines, and then there are times that he's actively interfered in play, right?

That was a great documentary.

Personally I completely disagree with Bernsie here. I love that college has coaches like that. Groce, Boeheim, Coach K....they are a huge part of what make it interesting and why I enjoy it.

Why? Not sure about Groce but given the short shelf life of most college bball players, the coaches provide the long-term connection to the fans. anything that minimizes the college coach's role, Image

Give us more Izzo, more Shaka, more Brad Stevens, more Pat Summitt.

I had $300 on Duke laying 6 to Syracuse a couple weeks ago when I was in Vegas. The fucking game was over for me. I didn't know who was going to win, but Duke sure wasn't going to cover. Then Jim Boeheim granted me a miracle by pulling his coat over his head and running on the court motherfucking the referee. Double technical and I get away with a push. I'll love Boeheim forever.

 Thats awesome. Some of his press conferences are classic too. The one from back in the 80s when he throws the chair is great.

Those were great days for college hoops. I remember there were a lot of ACC games on too. One of my good friends is still a huge Georgia Tech fan since he started pulling for them when they had the good team with Yvon Joseph, Mark Price, John Salley, and my high school classmate and fellow harness racing aficionado, Scott Petway.

Oh yeah, Bobby Cremins had it going down there for awhile.

Brings me kind of full circle here. Bernsie wants to sanitize sports by making it all stats on cray computers. Have college coaches robots even when I can no longer tell you the players on teams. College hops needs crazy coaches. I sure would like to see Knight now.

That's what makes this whole thing so upsetting.

It's relative, though. While North was race-baiting and vowel-shifting, B&B were running T.B. Diddler's skits and bantering with Joe in Evanston. Now that Bernstein's turned the station into his personal fiefdom, we get the worst of both worlds: eugenics and sabermetrics in equal measure. Given the choice between a hot-dog vendor who's too dumb not to be a racist billionaire-slurper and a poseur who takes great pains to sheathe what's essentially Neoliberalism Gone Wild in five-dollar words and Gladwellian pseudoscience, I think the latter is infinitely more socially corrosive.

I always viewed North as a guy from a background and generation that was way before political correctness to put it simply. I really think he was oblivious more than purposefully racist. If he was truly hateful no way Jiggs works with him so long.

You are looking at it the wrong way. The question should be what do you want from your station. I have always said there is room for Bernstein at the score, even the Bernstein of today. The station is failing in balancing him. He should not be in afternoon or morning drive where he feels empowered instead he should be mid days or nights were he understands that he is a niche broadcaster consumed by a relatively happy few dorks

That is very well put, GD.

Maybe Mitch gives Mac PM drive to get him to stay.

Oh, he's 6 feet onto the court for 12 minutes per game. Check out some of my .gifs in the Groce thread.

But I don't think he's ever been ejected, at least not at Illinois.

Maybe once.

I would take Pappy & Murph over Berns & I have a feeling many others would too.

I know that, but when we're talking about "interfering with play" I take it to mean he got in someone's way or touched the ball. Sure, Groce is on the wilder side, but none of these maniacs stays in the coach's box.

Supposedly there was some discussion about it after the Purdue game. There was at least one play where he was very close to an opposing player and did nothing to move.

My guess is that at some point a coach is going to instruct the player to run into him.
