I would tend to agree with you looking back at this having lived almost 38 years now. As a 10 yr
old I'd think you tend to notice people and things different than the norm and exploit it unless you are
extremely well adjusted or sensitive. My grade school years were in the 80s so I have no idea how
bullying works these days. I'm glad back in my day the worst thing that could happen was getting
pushed around and maybe your lunch money swiped.

Maybe the school shouldn't have banned it, but I see nothing wrong with a little guidance and wisdom from above about how it's a cruel world out there, and sometimes when we carry lunch boxes for a little girls' show about magical ponies, we're not helping our causes.

I'm sure the principal is irritated with all involved and likely had a meeting with the parents explaining bringing the lunch box is adding to the problems they are already trying to deal with. My guess is the parents feel their son should bring the My Little Pony lunch box to school and pushed the issue. While in theory the parents are correct, is not how the real world works.

There would be no uproar because there would be no situation. It's not a two-way street. Of course it's more acceptable for girls to like football than for boys to like My Little Pony. That's been the case as long as I can remember. There would be girls in school with, like, Packers-themed backpacks, but there sure as shit weren't any boys with Lisa Frank trapper-keepers. No, kids shouldn't intimidate or hurt a kid for liking My Little Pony, but at the same time, the adults here have some responsibility to admit that they can't stop all bullying and that some lunch boxes might be better for not getting bullied than other lunch boxes. I mean, when I was little, I used to love watching game shows on USA. My parents had to explain to me, somewhat firmly, that the other kids at school were not going to share my passionate interest in reruns of old game shows and that I would be well advised to share more populist interests so that I can better make friends (and implicitly, not get the shit kicked out me by assholes).

All my school paraphernalia was plain, by the way. I got enough derision in my life as it was without inviting further mockery through paper supplies.

I agree with you for the most part, but I will say that there will not always be an HR or Principal to go to.

Some of this stuff happens out on the mean streets (or parks)

3rd and 4th grade parents still set things up and there is a little supervision. You can arrange to have those kids over or do something. They become friends or at least aquaintences and things go from there.

Idk. If my son was dead set on having a MLP box I'd say okay but you are probably going to get some flack about it. You either have to stick up for yourself and be proud or not bring the MLP box to school. It's also not typical for 9/10 year old boy not just for gender reasons but MLP is really aimed toward 3-7 year olds. Maybe 8 but that is pushing it. There might be a maturity thing going on there and that is causing other issues.

You can be who you want yes, but if you want to be social you have to learn how to socialize. This seems to be the age where the I'm okay your okay stuff loses steam and carries thru high school.

Honestly, the whole brony thing is creepy and shitty. Here you have this show that was designed for young girls so that for once they could watch a cartoon that was sort of thoughtful and empowering, and then a bunch of weird dudes in their twenties pranced in, proclaimed themselves to be even bigger fans than the girls could be, and starting dressing up as the characters and writing slash fiction about them. Let kids be kids, guys.
