One of the few things I can agree with Bernstein on is that Beth Murphy and her fellow rooftop owners are scum bags.
Seems like a really odd choice for both parties?
Could be a Pearl Harbor like situation.

I heard meatpants and Mac discussing this yesterday. They said that they go where the sponsors want them. Spiegel sounded like he was not particularly thrilled

Why are they scumbags?

because they mooched off the cubs for years before the agreement was signed? I personally have some sympathy for their plight, I mean they all probably all banked on the profits of the rooftops to pay the mortgages for all the improvements they do to those buildings and the "agreement" probably gave them the confidence to move forward on those improvements....

Capt. Hindsight would tell them they should have sold their buildings when ricketts bought the team because a private owner was more likely to push for stadium improvements than the massive tribune company ever was.

Mooched? Looking at this in the best possible light for the Cubs, the rooftops and Cubs had an 80 year symbiotic relationship that benefitted the Cubs at least as much as it did the rooftop owners.

not so sure. from a distance (oot) but as a lifelong fan, the rooftops created some nostalgic feelings but really, wrigley would of survived and done well regardless of them being there or not. obviously, the other way around, not so much.

i think the rooftop owners should of seen the writing on the wall and gotten out. thats the most prudent business decision. contracts can be broken, penalties paid, and both can move on. the rooftop owners have always been not the ones in power here. i think they were shortsighted. this opinion comes to you from a acknowledged completely not in the know viewpoint.

First of all, there were buildings on those streets before Weeghman ever built his ballpark. Second, there seems to be some weird idea among a lot of fans that the ability to slap up more signs correlates with a better product on the field. Obviously false, but whatever. These are discussions we've had here time and time again.

I'm really just curious as to why anyone would characterize the owners of certain building as scumbags. I'm not saying they're not. I don't know them. Is Ricketts a scumbag for trying to mooch complete city streets?

You don't think well built mulit family residences walking distance from the el stop would have done fine?

The Cubs have been selling Wrigley, fairly independently of baseball for at least two decades. When you think of Wrigley the rooftops are a part of the imagined ambience. Removing the rooftops would be the same as removing the scoreboard

If the Cubs don't think the rooftops matter, why did they build a fake one at their new replica ballpark in Mesa?

He was at El Presidente on Saturday night. I'm shocked that he hasn't posted about it, yet.

A real bro does not travel just for the food, only walking distance from that place where he had two shots and it totally fucked him up
