I don't criticize having pets. If you have them you have to take them to the vet for regular care. People go overboard.

My criticism is directed at the mentally ill people who anthropomorphize their pet

I agree, though I can tell you that it is much more fulfilling if you don't humanize your pet. They lack our sense of self and identity and - obviously - our "intelligence", but they also carry many traits that we could learn from... living in the moment, lack of judgment, and the ability to focus on one thing at a time. I would argue that every animal does have its own "personality", even if it's not in the same sense that we think of human personalities.

That's why I think it's so shallow that Bernstein thinks you should just let them die. They're not all the same - they're very different, and their personalities grow on us just like humans' do. You can't just replace them, IMO.

You shouldn't just let them die. Imposing some the life extending techniques that are used on humans is something I would recommend...of course I don't really recommend them for humans either.

Congratulations. In all the thousands of words spent ripping Mr. Bernstein on this board (many of them mine in days gone by), this is the most perfect distillation of what he's all about in a mere dozen words I have ever seen. You've captured his essence. Just add in a "That is absolutely correct" from Terry and there is no need to ever tune into the Score again on a weekday from 1 to 6.

While I agree with Tad, I believe (Danno) CH summed it up better. Forgot his exact quote, but something like what Dan believes is right is right, until it's not, at which point he never believed in that at all. I'm sure I butchered it, but you get the gist.
