No specific examples, of course. Just a general observation. I don't see people using Blue Demon in their screen name, like Blue Demon Scot or something. Thoughts?

Why is it elitist? Maybe it's just a feeling of connection to the Midwest and school which leads to personal connections.

Just found it funny that out of many of the friends that went to college in Midwest never really bring up where they went to, but the Illinois, Michigan and Michigan State graduate friends make it clear where they went.

I'll take Ray Meyer over Gene Kadey.

Elite would not be correct, but always a sense of pride surrounding the school, which is well above the way everyone else perceives them.

Michigan and Illinois seem to have that cornered.

Michigan seems to be the worst with Illinois a close second.

See, if I cared about Purdue more I would be able to spell his name right.

To give you a real answer, I think Big Ten schools do a great job of creating a really strong connection between students and the university that is then extended past graduation. The people I know who went to other schools didn't really get that same level of connection. It probably has a lot to do with how electric the whole campus gets during the big weeks on campus.

I wonder too, given the locations of the schools to their respective towns, if its easier to build the atmosphere. Though BigFan disagrees, DePaul was a huge commuter school. Anytime we tried to get on-campus events for the organization I was a part of, the majority of people declined with their reason being the commute. And it wasn't like we were playing Frisbee golf or something, we were bringing in actual recruiters from Amoco, Microsoft, etc., so you knew commuting was a real challenge.

Michigan-Ann Arbor's full of East Coasters who couldn't get into a real college.

The rest of the Big Ten acting elitist is like the pigs in Animal Farm taking over the farmhouse.

No doubt. Also, there is almost nothing else to do in a lot of those towns. Besides a movie theater, and a mall, there wasn't even a reason to go more than a mile outside of campus. You basically spent your time either doing university activities, or hanging out with people or at places that are there because of the university.

I knew people who went to/commuted to some of the city schools, and it was like a job for them. They put the time in during the day and then went home.

Big Ten fans are the most obnoxious when it comes to conference pride/circle-jerks. Yes, SEC fans are the ones who chant S-E-C! for their own worst enemies, but that's to be expected of them because the SEC is basically a modern stand-in for the Confederacy. Shouldn't we expect more from the Public Ivies?

We could be a lot more obnoxious if we wanted.

I am not always proud to be an Illini alum.

The admissions clout scandal and the amount of money they pay some of their professors and administrators to do nothing while at the same time raising tuition through the roof are all both major embarrassments and a microcosm of what is wrong with this state.

And the Big 10 headquarters building is obnoxious.

Remember when dopey white guys in condiment-stained, team-colored sweatshirts were fretting about what letting Nebraska into their treehouse would mean for their academic reputations? In fairness, I believe Nebraska was ranked lower than every other Big Ten school in academics, but that will probably change with the academic advantages provided to Big Ten schools based on membership in the CIC.

So the Big Ten is the Chicago Catholic League of colleges.

Minnesotans don't brag; they're stoically comfortable in their obvious superiority.

Probably a good comparison, but at least the world cares what college you went to.
