If the #TOB2014 would have been just a few weeks later, I think "The Score studio being used as a toilet" could have had a pretty good run (no pun intended)

I re-read it and thought, well that looks like a paraphraise (sp?) of what he might say. NO, it was exactly what he said.

Although WSCR has attempted to brainwash me into thinking they're the scum on my shoe I'll be attending opening weekend in one. At a discounted price, rooftops are a great option when half your party doesn't necessarily care for baseball.

So is going to Wrigley Field.

Hawk is actually correct about Mickey Mantle. Saw a Documentary on him once. 3.1 seconds home to first. Yes, Bernstein, he was timed.

Mantle, when batting left-handed was timed running from home-plate to first base in 3.1 seconds (the fastest time of any player in history), this is incredible feat.

It's the whole Butkus argument reframed. Butkus had the documented size and speed of current first round LB, but they simply refuse to recognize the truth about his measurables.

they also made fun of hawk saying Bo Jackson had the most opposite field power of anyone he saw. sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Nope. You should have heard them around 130 or so laughing about the idea that Mantle was the fastest ever . " It's just a wrong thought" and anyone who would even entertain it was an idiot.. There was no way in hell he was faster than Willie Wilson or Vince Coleman . Someone tweet that link to Bernstein.

In Dan's mind the fact that Mantle is white automatically eliminates him from the conversation.

Yeah, and Terry knows very well what Mickey Mantle was. He just doesn't want to get into it with bernstein. The thing is, among those who really know, bernstein just comes off as a dunce with this stuff. But so few listeners actually do know that he can get away with this stupidity and still be considered a Really Smart Host.

Mantle is the greatest player that ever played the game and quite likely the greatest American athlete of all time. Had he played hoops he would have been an NBA point guard. Maybe not Bob Cousy but probably an All-Star. (Although it's likely he may have been caught up in a college point-shaving scandal.) Had he played football he would have been a star quarterback for the Sooners. He put up Ruthian numbers and he was drunk or hungover most days and on two bad knees. The only guys that are in the conversation with him are Jim Thorpe and Bo Jackson and neither of them had the kind of hand-eye coordination and ability to hit a baseball that Mick did.

To put Mantle's speed in perspective here is the chart scouts use to figure running speed.

Home to first (right side)

80: 4.0 seconds
70: 4.1 seconds
60: 4.2 seconds
50: 4.3 seconds
40: 4.4 seconds
30: 4.5 seconds
20: 4.6 seconds

Home to first (left side)

80: 3.9 seconds
70: 4.0 seconds
60: 4.1 seconds
50: 4.2 seconds
40: 4.3 seconds
30: 4.4 seconds
20: 4.5 seconds

If I timed someone at 3.1 seconds home to first I'd go out the next day and buy a new stopwatch.

That home run Bo hit to put the Sox in the playoffs, I was in the RF bleachers, was unlike any HR I'd ever seen. It was a popup. The SS even started drifting into shallow left. But the thing just kept going straight up in the air until it dropped down into the bleachers.

I been to hundreds of games (I'm a baseball fan) and I've never seen anything like that - even when Sammy hit one over the CF camera booth at Wrigley.

What did Mantle do that Willie Mays didn't?

And his bad knees are his problem. Part of being an athlete is staying in one piece. I mean you can't say "what if he had good knees?" in this argument

Got on base 42% of the time.

That's true to a point. Injuries are part of the player. But it's not like we're talking about Derrick Rose here. This is a guy that had arguably the best career of any player on bad knees and while drinking himself into a stupor with Whitey and/or Billy every night. Wondering what he might have been had DiMaggio not cut him off and had he had more personal discipline is a legitimate thought.
