Why is that?

I have nothing against Muslims. And "scare" is probably a bad term. But Europe is experiencing a cultural shift that will eventually erode their customs and traditions due to the high influx of Islam.

As an atheist, I already resent any forcing of religion in America - primarily Christianity. I don't want to deal with more, especially from a religion that can be very forceful in its views.

That said, I do want to say that isn't always the case. In fact, I believe my good friend Vegan is Muslim. I have no problem with that. Vegan is smart and well-rounded and doesn't try to force his beliefs on me. It is not his kind that I am referring to.

"Arab" just means that you or your ancestors hail from that region of the world typically inhabited by Semitic Peoples (middle east region). It has no religious or specific/country-based ethnic designation.

Right, but because "Arab" has become conflated with "Muslim," it seems like Christians from Syria and Lebanon would prefer not to identify as such. Plus, you have Assyrians/Chaldeans who aren't ethnic Arabs in the first place. Persians and Armenians particularly hate to be mistaken for Arabs.

Another great Arab: our very own Brandon Saad!

High ceiling/low floor when it comes to Middle Eastern women.

Got this email. I did call the number and yes, press 3 for Arabic:

This is from a fellow who lives and works in Dearborn!

You can't work in the school system front offices if you don't speak Arabic now and need to know many dialects as some Arabs can't understand others Arabic language!

Understand, everybody goes back to the 'homeland' for months and expects to get passed on to the next grade It's crazy as I am at ground zero on this kids (assuming girls, can't tell for sure) roaming the hallways in full blown burkas.

Dearborn and the Detroit area have had a large middle-eastern immigrant population forever. Mid-east immigration, medical weed and poutine hot dogs are about the only things that bankrupt city has going for it these days.

Why thanks, but I don't think I've stepped up my vegan proselytizing just yet. You may have spoken too soon.

To your larger point here, I don't think such ghettoization is likely here for ethnic communities that far away from us. The geographic proximity europe has with Russia, ME, south Asia, etc, makes it less costly not only to migrate there but also conduct visits back and forth. It's more prohibitive to do that when further away, which is why I don't think we will see as strong a markedly immigrant (ie lack of integration) presence, culturally or even numerically, here as we see from some Latino communities. The trend should be further integration/assimilation the more you move away from the immigrant generation. These are just my observations as a non immigrant.

Vegan, are you Arab? Turkish? Pakistani? Do you get confused for one or the other?

I find that disconcerting.

Champ where is the evidence that these arabs in Dearborn just came into this country and are immediately getting welfare? I believe you are just making that assumption because of the "press 3 for arabic.." and the Obama comments that were contained in that post.

My point was that arab immigrants have been in Dearborn since the early 20th century (longer than some of my family) and it is perfectly reasonable to assume that the downturn in the auto industry is what forced many of these people on to welfare.

Actually, I do think there are certain tax breaks for Chaldeans who come over here. Probably how they afford the Escalades.
