Prosecutors like capital punishment not for the actual punishment but for the bargaining chip it gives them against perps. False confessions/wrongful convictions run rampant in states with the death penalty vs civilized states.

I am not going to get in a long and drawn out discussion no this, it is not what I do. Again, I know my beliefs are different than some.

I don't like the death penalty for the following reasons:

1. It tends to unfairly target minorities.
2. There have been a great number of innocent people on death row exonerated.
3. There have been a great number of innocent people on death row... miss exoneration until it was too late.
4. Murdering people, whether with state sponsorship or not, is still murder.
5. There is not great evidence to support the claim that capital punishment acts as a deterrent. If it did, we wouldn't be putting anyone on death row at all.
6. It is proven to be cheaper to the taxpayers to sentence to life rather than death as the appeals process is more expensive than 50 years in jail.
7. Murder cases, particularly ones like we're discussing today, tend to provoke highly emotional responses. We tend, as humans, to react extremely in times of high emotional stress and use less rational thought, tend to seek revenge or vengeance rather than justice, and when a man's life is at stake, we owe it to our own humanity to use nothing but rational thought, without a hint of emotion. That's why the family testimony during sentencing hearings bothers me, just people screaming and yelling and providing an emotional context to the case that in my opinion does not belong.

I'm sure I'll think of more. But that's a good start for now.

Retributive justice is different from vengeance. While I am more for restorative justice it's not possible in all cases. I agree on 1-3 the others not really.
