I always felt that even though I was a Cub fan first and foremost, I was also a Sox fan. Then when I watched the Sox win in 2005 it felt like I just watched the Seattle Mariners win the World Series, did absolutely nothing for me.

It's actually pretty illogical to choose a team based mostly on geographical location, but then not root for the other team in the same geographical location.

That is where I have fallen. The only reason I'm a Sox fan is because they don't exist in Tampa. If it was the Tampa Bay Sox, I'd be a Cubs fan. So, why not just be a Cubs fan too?

I didn't choose to root for them because of location. I rooted for them because the were the only team I could easily watch everyday on television.

I had no feelings about the Sox, good or bad, until I moved to Chicago.

Now you can watch both teams easily on television.

How does one just 'become' a fan? There has to be some attachment.

The attachment is often very superficial and almost always it is primarily due to geography. If you were born in the suburbs of St. Louis you'd likely be a Cardinals fan.

I just can't help but think of the fact that if the Sox had moved to Tampa Bay that I would be a Cubs fan right now. It makes it seem kind of stupid to not root for the Cubs too simply because the Sox stayed in a geographical location I don't even live near right now.

I used to think this also - but now that I know so many people that are Dallas Cowboy fans, Steelers fans, 49ers fans, Dolphins fans.....etc, I'm not sure that's true.

It also has to do with who your parents watched when you were a kid, who your grade school friends liked, who was successful when you were a kid, etc.

This.

My dad was a Cubs fan, and Wrigley is where we would go when I was a kid. When I got heavily into baseball in junior high and early high school, I started watching both teams but more of my friends liked to discuss the Cubs.

Regarding my Vikings fandom...I started watching NFL in 1997...1998. Vikings had a very fun offense and were being televised pretty much every week.

I was actually a huge Magic fan from the mid 1990's until McGrady was gone. Then I finally became a Bulls fan...I enjoyed Hinrich, Deng, & Nocioni, but I would say this decision was probably based on where I lived.

There were always kids our age who were into the Orlando Magic in grade school. Probably a combo of Shaq, proximity to Disney, and kind of a Baby's First Contrarianism thing.

I loved the Dan Fouts era Chargers. I thought their helmets were cool. I loved the offense and the exciting games. They also seemed to be the televised game every week at 3.

I was originally a huge Cowboys fan. I knew more about them than the Bears in my youth.

I can't comprehend changing ones fanhood. being a fan is like being married. just becuase you made a huge mistake at the beginning doesn't mean you can just say ooopsie and pull a switcheroo. you are stuck being miserable for life. that's how it is supposed to work.

I get that.

I just think it is interesting to think how popular teams in major metropolitan areas are with the local fans but for some reason you are expected to root for one or the other when it comes to baseball. It just seems like an arbitrary line. You are most likely to root for a local team, but don't root for two local teams!

Joe Orr thinks Shark had a bad game because he couldn't get the W. Nothing to do with the fact that Rizzo, Castro, and Olt went 0fer (Rizzo looked particularly bad doing so). Shark couldn't outpitch Liriano! 7 shutout innings isn't enough!!

I wonder if he's a Pirates fan on the side now.

You can switch one time in your life, or add a second team.

Personally though, I'm becoming a bigger fan of rooting for players over teams. Drew Brees winning the Super Bowl almost felt on the level of the Bears making it.

I think rooting for your school or a player who went to your school is a lot different though. If Brees ended up say on the Packers, you would probably still be pulling for him to be successful, but happy when they lost.

I'm sure somewhere along the line there was a Knicks or Pistons fan who attended UNC and because of that really loved Michael Jordan.

Pussification of America. You leave my team then you're dead to me and especially to a rival. Special exemption is made for Mark DeRosa though.

You aren't following Devin Hester to Atlanta? Oh, that's right, you don't count.

Would you understand someone being both a Nets and Knicks fan? Or is that worse because they are in the same conference and division?

I see it as...there is only one championship to win every year. You can't truly be an equal fan of two teams because of this. You can't want both teams to win it. And if you're of the mind "well, if either team wins it it would be cool!" then I'd argue you're not a true fan of either.

My Vikings / Bears interest is a lot more simple. I'm a Vikings fan. I enjoy watching and following the Bears because they are a local team, and it makes it easier to discuss football with my friends. If the Bears do well...friends are more likely to talk Bears and I enjoy talking sports.

But Vikings vs. Bears? Vikings each and every time.

It's worse because it involves being a fan of the Nets.

I would understand it. I even have some appreciation for the Knicks now because of my time here, but because the NBA is a horrible league which sucks and should be disbanded, I haven't really spent a lot of time on the NBA since I've been out here.

I'm not saying they have to be equal. I still want the Sox to win the title, but I'd like the Cubs to win one also. It's very unlikely they ever actually stop each other from winning a title.
