agree

i still watch every episode (thank you DVR, i couldnt stand watching that show for 1.5 hours straight), when the show actually has a funny live sketch they'll run it again 3 of the next 6 shows beating it to death

the only funny skits are the pre-recorded bits and some of the weekend update jokes

dyke and fats was funny, and given the short glimpse we saw perhaps they can actually expand on that bit..... but in general, that fat girl is not funny and not at all attractive (even compared to other chubby girls)

 You're probably the only guy worried about the fat girl being "attractive".

Keenan Thompson may be the least funny person on the face of the planet.

Comedy Central means comedians don't need to go through SNL at the start of their careers any more. Colbert, Anthony Jeselnik, Chappelle, et al would've been good SNL cast members.

I agree that perception > reality when it comes to the greatness of SNL, but those years with Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, et al were definitely good sketch comedy, however mainstream it may have been. By and large, though, it definitely coasts on being a cultural institution rather than anything that's actually funny.

Hartman was my favorite in sketches and Norm MacDonald was my favorite on the update desk.

There was a lot of garbage too.

The problem with modern SNL is that we judge it on all the skits. We judge previous years based on the skits we remember.

The ratio was much better then though

There was always 1-2 funny skits.

I'd say there still are, though some shows are much better than others. There have been some bad hosts where the show isn't funny but I don't think that is a new phenomenon either.

Brick is right. For every classic skit a show back then may have had 3 total misses. You tend to recall the great ones. Same with music etc.

As far as sketch shows go Mr. Show is the best and most consistently good. SCTV and Chappelle's Show are two of the best as well.

For me SCTV with Candy, Moranis et all that was it. I can watch Strange Brew or Summer Rental 1,000 times.

For me it doesn't get any better than The State. The Last Supper skit is an all time classic. Damn was that show funny and nearly all of its cast has gone on to star it quite a few films.

As far as SNL goes........Keenan has been on the cast for damn near a decade. That pretty much sums up how things are going for it.

what separates SNL from all other sketch shows is that it's a weekly live show. they have 3-4 days to prepare a 90 minute show. you can't hold it to the same standard as the others...even revues like second city can perform the same show over and over again without coming up with new material all the time.
