Basically, he can do all the things that Beckham can do. College SS, came up as a 3b, didn't look overmatched; settled in as the MLB 2B out of positional need. It boils down to whether you think he can be a better hitter than Beckham has shown, and Bacon pretty much has shown us what he is at this point. Semien is younger, cheaper, team-controlled for longer, and may not have yet reached his ceiling. Were I Rick Hahn; I'd much rather gamble on Semien. The only difference with the level of fanfare of him coming up vis-à-vis the 2B incumbent-- Gordon has that first round pedigree.

Hopefully you're right. We're gonna need him to pick it up soon to keep this 162-0 train chuggin'

Over-reacting to SSS is the mark of a true fan

What makes you think that? You obviously know the game better than I do but he looks awful.

Call it approach, call it makeup, adjustments... he doesn't have tools. I've looked at a couple guys the last few years that weren't prospects come up into timeshares, blossom into ASG type players in Allen Craig and Matt Carpenter. They are contact hitters that have a plan up there, and call it feel, but i see the same makeup in young Marcus. Semien is almost the reverse of what folks on this board will correctly deride as KW types; unlike previous and current White Sox prospects in that he draws tons of walks and has good contact numbers. His career arc is similar to the 2 players I mentioned, here is a quick summary:

Simien had a monster So. year at Cal, but only hit about .275 with no power as a Jr.

After falling to the WS as an unnotable draftee, he held his own in Low-A (.253/.320/.376) despite being just 20. Most guys that age will be in rookie league.
In 2012, he had a bustout of sorts (.273/.362/.471) hitting 14 HR at High A Winston-Salem. I had the chance to observe him and a couple other, more heralded draft picks down there. *
2013 in AA saw him win the leagues MVP (.290/.420/.483) with a 15 HR/ 20 SB campaign in 393 at-bats, and spend brief times with the AAA and MLB clubs.

He's basically played 2 full seasons at the professional level and shown remarkable improvement. Obviously, you guys are watching the games (I have not been able to view either game live) and his career may wound up as a journeyman. I'm just saying give him time to get acclimated, he can play all of the infield positions adequately to above average, and has the arm strength to play 3B or SS. He has shown the ability to improve at each level.
*I can understand if you think I may conflate his value, or have a personal interest in seeing him succeed, as everyone likes to find a diamond in the rough after seeing some guy that nobody heard of in the minors. Only time will tell.

Some of the rude members of this board might write something like "wordy mfer'. Rest assured I would not

The better alternative is to trade Alexei.

Mark it as it is documented in the threads. I said if it falls right 500 and/or a WC is not out of the question. Of course, they could get hurt or take a shit and lost 83 but not 99. That was Bernsie's outlier.

Yeah well I said 90-72. Now all we need to do is go 88-72. It's gonna happen. This offense will pick up the slack from the bullpen.

Sounds like they're gonna try to get this game in today. Could be ugly.

Where did you hear that?

Weve been debating it in the office (fantasy implications)

Mac and drinky. And Kerry Sayers. Maybe not the most reliable of sources.

You really don't need sources for something like a forecast.

Just looking at the radar, they're gonna have about a 4 hour window to get this game in before it rains again.

I'm a pretty reliable source.

Beardown is the Farmer's Almanac of the board.

Sox get to play today in cold, damp, windy conditions. Cubs get to play tomorrow in temps that are a bit warmer but still cold, yet a lot windier.

Winter was awful and outside of a couple days this Spring has been fucking brutal too.

I mean you can find it yourself.

Current radar:

Storm coming in from the southwest. Won't be here until 5 or 6.

Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning.

No, I thought he heard someone like a coach or announcer talk about how they "really want to get this game in"

Not specifically from their mouth. But the updates said that someone in the White Sox organization, I didn't catch who, wants to get this game in. It sounded like they talked to someone, not just guessing based on a forecast.

Yup. Plus the rain is more likely to negatively affect the Twins. Something to be said for Chicago tough.

I don't know if they're really hot. You do everything in your power to play cuz the Twins are in town.

From Brooks and Jerry's perspective, since the Twins come in at least 2 more times, they'd love to bang it. Would mean a lot of money. 500 people today or 20k in June or July as part of a double header.

But they can't cancel it. There is no rain in site until this evening.

Anyone else listening to Rongey with Hawk? Man I love Hawk. "Rick Hahn has done probably the greatest job I've ever seen of a GM turning around a baseball club"

  Every game now Hawk has seen something that is the best ever in his parts of 6 decades in this game.

In Spring Training I heard him say that "that might be the best short hop pick I have ever seen in a Spring game"

Of course it does. You have those White Sox colored glasses glued to your face.

I think the 97 Marlins might disagree. Or the 09 Yankees. Hell, if they dont win the division they'll be looking up at the 07 Cubs

White Sox are on pace to crush all those teams. A +99 win turnaround is gonna be tough to beat.
