Wow. I don't know how to feel about this. He's clearly lost his fastball but I've always been somewhat of a fan.

All he wanted to do was outlast Leno. Plus, Leno got fired twice in the last 5 years. Letterman goes out on his terms. Even though Leno beat him regularly in the ratings over the last 20 years, Letterman thinks he wins cuz he goes out his way while Leno went out screaming, bitching and scheming.

Plus, Letterman never wanted to appeal to middle America so he knew he'd never beat Leno. Letterman wanted to be mean. Leno was always the phony nice guy that stupid people liked.

Jon Stewart replaces him, right? That's always been the long rumor.

I don't think Leno beat him. Leno started on third base.

Conan probably would have gotten higher ratings too, if Leno hadn't undercut him. Fallon is now.

Was the Letterman thing one of those demo things? Like Leno won the war but Letterman usually had the demo advantages for revenue?

I'm just going by what the reports. They say Leno led in the ratings during most of the 20 years.

I don't watch much of the late shows anymore. Every now and then. I loved Letterman as a kid, though. I never watched Leno at all over the last decade or so.

Caught a little bit of these new guys. Kimmel is OK. I don't know why everybody seems to love Fallon. He seems like another Leno, but can sing and dance. His interviewing skills are bad. He's just kind of a sucks up to the celebrities.

That's why I always liked Letterman. He'd kind of challenge celebrities and jabbed at them sometimes. Not all of them. But some.

Bummer.

Anybody else watch when he was on in the mornings?

End of an era.

From what I heard on Silvy & Waddle, Conan's TBS contract is up next year. If that's true, he may be the one to get the Late Show. He may need to change the Ts to Cs on his business cards.

If Letterman would have worked harder maybe he could have overcome where he started out at.

It always surprises me how many people still care about late night talk shows.

Totally agree. I'm pretty sure the same people that fall asleep to Jimmy Fallon wake up to Eric & Kathy.

People may not realize it, but Conan has never been better.

Watch some Youtube clips - just hilarious.

He is doing awesome work on the TBS show. His timing is honed like a surgical instrument.

He would be the perfect successor to Dave - TWO TIMES! TWO TIMES!

I can see Dave setting that up, too.

He peaked from about 1997-2003

 That wasn't a shot at RPB. Rick feels that all a child that isn't born on 3rd base has to do is work hard in order to pass the kid that was born on 3rd base. I just found it odd that he would dismiss all the hard work Leno had to put in over 20 to maintain his spot at the top. Why couldn't Letterman catch or pass the guy that started on 3rd?

No. Johnny Carson would be a better option right now.

I'd be shocked if Letterman's production company didn't have some control over the rights to the Late Show and prevented that from even being on the table.

Jesus Christ, I heard a rumor Chelsea Handler might get the job. She's leaving E! around the same time Fossil Dave is retiring. Don't think it will be Ferguson. He's too weird and likes to test the censors all the time. Fuck Stewart. He'll probably get the job but he's such a little penis. Conan, maybe. He'd be like Dave 2: Revenge of the Dave. But big network execs have little imagination.

It's only his production company cuz that was part of his deal for him to come to CBS. Why does CBS have to keep Dave as the owner of the show? They don't. They can produce the show now that Letterman is gone. It's their network. Leno never owned the Tonight Show.

That would be terrible but pretty pc commonplace to try to use a woman.

Chris Hardwick would be a good choice if you're trying to expand beyond the geriatric demographic that these late night shows currently have.

Hardwick's current show, @midnight, takes over twitter every weeknight while it's on; and he's done the celebrity interview thing with Talking Dead/Bad and hosting silliness with Singled Out.

Some chatter about CBS possibly going to a single 90 minute show rather than two 1 hour shows. Doubt Ferguson gets a shot at that, but Stewart or Colbert could be the choice there.

Carson, I guess, used to do 90 minute shows, and smoke cigarettes on the air throughout? Dunno.

Jay Leno's the easy money-maker who will give you ratings as long as his audience is still alive.

Not only smoke but if you look at clips from the 60s and early 70s they used to be drinking on air.

For a few shows CBS tried to do a Steve and Garry late night show. Dahl wanted it to be like a classic playboy after dark. Drink in hand and Dean Martinish poolside thing. This were the days.
