On MLB Extra Innings, I have been subjected to the Twins and now the Royals announcing crew.

These guys have very little content. They are doing a passable job of describing the action but nothing special. I'm just incredibly bored.

Hawk has his problems but at least he adds something of value to the broadcast.

Until they are losing...then he sulks.

Once Hawk is gone....it will be cookie cutter vanilla guys for eternity. Yea he's got his faults but he's the last of a dying breed.

I think this is overstated. He sulks when the Sox are horrible, which was a lot last year though. It's not like when they are down 3-2 that he disappears.

Nope. He's smart enough to know that Sox fans don't want to hear stupid stories about Black Keys concerts when Matt Lindstrom just blew a two run lead in the ninth. Sometimes there is just nothing that needs to be said.

I had the Pirates on for the Cubs series and they are pretty good. Its Bob Walk and somone else. I used to hate getting Bob Walk baseball cards when I was a kid cause he was ugly as all hell to look at. Looks ok now.

I do find it funny that people- never Sox fans, mind you- get so upset when Harrelson just goes silent in disgust. It's a fucking TV broadcast! You saw Thome crush the ball for another Sox loss. Do you really need Hawk to explain what happened? The picture speaks for itself.

These Royals announcers spent time talking about the difference between a megabyte and a gigabyte, and I don't think any of them actually knew the answer.

I think Kasper is good. He doesnt have the huge personality of a Hawk but he keeps you interested.

There are certain guys who are just so bad at the off the cuff part of the job that they have to just report balls and strikes like a robot

I think most announcers talk way too much. I'm a lot older than you, though. When you go back to the broadcasts I grew up with there wasn't the effort to fill up every inch with words that there seems to be now. The first guys I remember that babbled non-stop were Harry and Piersall and it was something different. Some old guys thought they took away from the game, but the team was terrible so it made things entertaining. Obviously, that style of broadcast has become popular to the point where a guy just letting the picture do the talking at certain points feels odd.

I agree many of the announcers would do well to talk a little less...but if my options are someone who doesn't shut up or someone who literally shuts down when the game gets out of hand, I'll take the guy still talking...if it's really that bad, I can hit the mute button or just stop watching.

I'll admit to pushing the button in disgust when Gordon hit the ball over Garcia.

TV guys are pretty terrible for the most part. The skilled broadcasters are on radio.

Skip was pretty sparse a lot of the time, IIRC.

Yes I find myself listening to Brewers, Indians, Tigers, Rangers and others and especially in the summer. I rag on baseball but not much is better than it on the radio chilling on the porch in the summer with a beer.

I'll try to pick up WLW and KMOX when I can. The migration of sports play-by-play from AM clear channels to FM really sucks for dorks like me.
