It's not really a religious event even though it is organized by the church. Should the white house one be cancelled? Would they have had an issue if the hunt was sponsored by a park district and not a church?

Why not?

Because it's a public school.

So is it relgious events as a whole that aren't proper or just the ones that are done in a public school....

even though an Easter Egg Hunt is really skirting the idea of a religious event.

I said I wouldn't personally care if they were my kids, but it gets too blurry. What is religious and non-religious? I think it's best to avoid it altogether.

Of course not. That quote is out of context. I meant not proper in a public school. People can do whatever they want on their own.

Edit: it's not technically out of context, but I meant they aren't proper in a public school. I should have clarified.

I agree.

Giant Easter bunnies should probably be worshiped, though.

I think this is the flyer. It has no religious anything on it except the church. No services, nothing about worship, no mention of Easter.

Would you be okay with your kids being invited to a mosque while at school? I'm honestly curious -not being rhetorical.

If they are hosting an egg hunt, no I wouldn't care. I guess the setting makes it seem questionable but I can choose to go or not to go. Egg hunts (and I think including this one) aren't really focused on religion.

Pretty innocuous flyer. Somehow I doubt his kid gave two Allahs about it:

Quote:
“It really bothered my two kids,” parent Majed Moughni told the Free Press. “My son was like, ‘Dad, I really don’t feel comfortable getting these flyers, telling me to go to church. I thought churches are not supposed to mix with schools.”

I'd be worried a flyer inviting kids to an Easter egg hunt at a Catholic church was some pedo priest trolling for dates.

Fair enough. But to play Devil's advocate, I could argue that an egg hunt is not a fair comparison. What if a Mosque invited your kids to play in a game that is loosely related to a Muslim holiday?

Let's be honest: the egg hunt wouldn't exist if not for the Christian holiday Easter, regardless of whether it's on the flyer.

Again, I wouldn't care as a parent and a non-Christian, but it gets too blurry for me, so I think we should avoid it altogether.

I don’t like it. If it was to study cultures from around the world, okay. But they should not target a specific religion.

Holy shit, they're making them say prayers to Allah!? How are they getting away with that?

You tell me. Like I said you see news stories about stuff like that once in a while about schools teaching tolerance for Muslim faith. How about what they did on the University of Chicago? Took pews out of a Christian church and put prayer mats in so now the Muslims on campus could pray there. What do you think would be the response if they did that to a Mosque?

Eggs have been used as symbols of fertility and life for centuries before the Christians adopted it as a symbol of resurrection. Almost all countries, religion, or ethnicities have a "ritual" with an egg. Some break em, some paint them, some eat them. Yes they are associated with Easter but the pastor of this church has said this isn't a religious event. They have every right to open it to the community.

If somebody sends my kids home with a flyer for a game that is loosely related to a Muslim holiday saying it's not a religious event...I'm probably not going but I am not going to be offended by it either. Jehovah's Witnesses come to my door occasionally, I don't freak out.

I don't think there is separation between church and state is in the constitution and it's used wrong (imo) all the time. It does not mean you are to be religion free and cannot talk about it nor are you free from exposure to it. It says In God We Trust on our currency.

You ever get those "Christians" coming to your door to try to get you to be a Christian?

Well, I'm already a Catholic, so I would always tell them that and shut the door.

Now, I like to amuse myself. I tell them I'm a Muslim, I support Bin Laden and terrorism. I've done that the last 3 or 4 times. Should see the looks on their faces as I shut the door.

Try it. It's fun.

Kid's uncomfortable about being invited to a Presbyterian church? What are they going to do to him, make him breakfast?

Not since the last time they came to the house and I answered the door wearing only a pair of shorts.

Way too many people spending way too much time worrying about what other people are doing. Everything offends someone. It's just ridiculous.
