Because the thought of the Teamsters or any other such Union being involved with public & private universities scares a lot of people.

That's not a very good argument against ending free labor for an $11 billion concern.

Do you honestly believe that unionization is the solution to this issue? Really? Do you really believe that college athletes are "free labor? The scholarship players get a free $250K education out of it. Not to mention the pussy & other benefits. Not bad for a 21 year old kid.

$250k in education?

Even if we were only talking Ivy League schools that is fucking laughable. Go with $60k and we can at least talk about without even acknowledging how ridiculously overpriced a degree is from your average state school.

I was off by $2912.00.

Northwestern University Cost of Attendance:

The basic formula used to calculate the cost of attendance for the 2013-14 academic year is as follows:
Expense Amount
Tuition $45,120
Fees (Health $200, ASG $162, Athletic $45) $407
Room and Board $13,862*
Books and Supplies $1,878
Personal Expenses $1,926
Loan Fee $35
Transportation Varies
Cost of Attendance $63,228

Thank you for backing up my point about how absurdly overpriced a college degree is. But that stil doesn't take into account how different the tuition is at many other Division I schools.

But that wasn't the argument. No one was debating if a college degree is over priced. You laughed at my assertion that it costs $250K to go to college. I showed you that the students at the School who went to the NLRB who are on scholarship receive a free $250K education. $62,500 per year isn't bad for a College kid. I would have gladly taken it.

I'm not even sure the figures you posted are accurate, but of course you would've taken it. You weren't a D1 football player responsible for earning your school exponentially more in revenue than the perceived value of your scholarship.

You think I make this stuff up? Here you go, from the Northwestern website:

Of course athletes are free labor. I don't know what else you would call them. And stop saying they are receiving a college degree in exchange for playing. They aren't. They are allowed to enroll in school as long as they are benefiting the school's football or basketball program. Once they fail to provide a benefit to that team, they are disposable.

And I doubt the NU players are going to vote to Unionize. You ask if I think Unionization is the best answer to the problem. Well, no, but nothing else was working. Just listen to that arrogant prick Mark Emmert. He sounds like a southern planter circa 1850. I know that comparison makes BRick angry. But seriously, just listen to the guy. The answer is to stop all athletic scholarships and recruiting and create real student-athletes. Or stop intercollegiate sports altogether and let the students play intramurals. Robert Maynard Hutchins had it right.

There is an inequity here that unionization will not solve.

And if I missed it somewhere, I'm sorry, but the ramifications to female athletics would be damaging enough that it may put an end to them on the D1 level.

That was Jay Bilas. Love it when he rips on the NCAA hipocrisy.

It would be easier to take Jay Bilas or John Feinstein seriously, if they weren't working for networks who are partners with the NCAA.

All I know is the few times I've heard Bilas he ripped on the NCAA with vigor.

Women aren't going to sit for that.

And my guess is, if unionized, men will cry foul about Title IX.

The thing is, the big money college sports support the rest of the schools athletic program, most of which would lose money on their own. I don't care how you analyze it, these kids are getting a free education. Unfortunately many of them either don't know what to do with it or don't care to do anything with it.
Unionization would be bad for college athletics a a whole.

50 -60% of big time college football & basketball programs are profitable.

Here is the official NCAA report:
Revenues and Expenses: 2004-2012 — NCAA® DIVISION I INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS PROGRAMS REPORT
This report is 108 pages & no, I have not read the entire report.

This is a canard. Most of the big football programs consume nearly every dollar they bring in.

You get paid though. And every job like your job is not controlled by a single entity which sets the value of said job and imposes its rules upon anyone who wants to do said job. That would be illegal.

So are you saying that the big time programs don't really have much money to pay players?

No. I'm saying there are a lot of people who never get concussions getting real fat. There's a lot being spent on all kinds of things besides the guys who are actually doing the work.
