Kind of a long story, but gonna post it anyway.

Last month, I got an email to take another one of those famed surveys from the White Sox. Two free upper deck seats, so I spent the 5 minutes and took one. Unbeknownst to me, my wife did too. So we have 4 tickets in section 524 for Saturday. I'm not real big on the upper deck, but free tickets on a nice Saturday, we'll tailgate, I've spent weekends doing on lot worse.

We were going to take my wife's younger brother. He had a knee surgery for the 7th time on his right knee a few weeks back. He's had a ton of problems with the knee, and he was hoping this would be the last procedure. Long story short, he hasn't been responding well to his therapy so its still going to be a long road. Given that he is recovering, he can't work so he is almost broke. We were gonna take him to the game to try and cheer him up and give him a nice afternoon out.

Obviously, we didn't have wheelchair seats which we need because my bro in law would not be able to walk around all day at a ball park on crutches. My wife called the Sox and tried to get the tickets transferred or upgraded if we paid more, but it wasn't going to happen on that phone call. The lady she was talking to took her name and number and said she would see what she could do. This was a week ago and we didn't hear anything, so we figured nothing would happen.

My wife just called me and said some sort of manager in the ticket office (couldn't understand his name) left her a message that there will be 4 free tickets in the handicapped seating in section 151 under her name for Saturdays game. The Sox could have done nothing or told us to piss off, but they didn't. The Sox catch a lot of shit for things they do, and some of it is deserved, but there also do things like this that maybe don't make the papers or a thread here. Just thought this was a very cool move that deserved some kudos.

they're gonna escort you to a secluded corner of the stadium where the off-duty thugs, errr, cops, will beat the crap out of your entire family for trying to pull a scam.

enjoy yourself!

Nice gesture.

They should be overly accommodating at every chance they get. Any team that isnt selling out every game should.

For the cold game last week against Minnesota, any ticket that was used or unused can be redeemed for an outfield seat, lower corner, or upper deck seat for any other April game. At least its something for the fans either froze their ass off or didn't go because of the cold.

I understand they need to turn a profit (save it, bigfan) but yes they should be accommodating every fan they can within reason. They should have $5 upper deck seats every game.

And they certainly should allow 500 level ticketholders to come downstairs when only 10,000 people are in the park.

Absolutely. At that point, close off the 500 level and open up extra concessions on the lower deck.

What are they offering the physically challenged guy at the Fundamentals booth? Roll around the bases in a wheelchair?

I'm 100% behind this or at least allow those in the 500 level enjoy some of the lower deck amenities like the kid area. I'm going this weekend to Sunday's game where my brother in law got free tickets from vettix and looking for lower bowl to enjoy some of the items on the lower deck.

This news is going to affect the Sox attendance discussion. Now we have paid attendance and the freebies / give away attendance. Sox are giving away tickets!

i've sat in the upper deck on a cold night in april. it's a thing. the most symbolic aspect of the night was watching a piece of garbage float up from the field to the upper deck, although this was the 2005 white sox and i went home that night and wrote a blog entry on why that's the kind of team that wins championships.

oh wait, sorry, farvefan might show up and say that had no logic and upon further inspection was baseless gobbeldygook. i wish i had that strikethrough font ready.

but yeah the white sox tend to be pretty good about this sort of thing. there was that one year circa 2008 where i befriended a beer vendor in the smoking area at the ramps (i lit up a cigarette and ran interference for him while he finished his joint) and he was like "come on over to my concession stand in the left field corner... it'll be worth your while) --- indeed, all season whenever i showed up to get my beer from him i'd give him a $10 for a MGD and he'd give me change like i gave him a $20. i'd tip him the $2-3 change or whatever (or if i had singles he got them) and then i'd keep the $10 for the next beer. i have no idea how the guy kept his job but it worked all year long, which was an indelibly beautiful thing. you don't typically get stories like this at the shrine, but hey, you do get the creepy owners walking through the concourses like they're actual human beings! that's a thing.

Get a group. Put the tickets together. Slip folded ten dollar bill under the bottom ticket. Take the oldest looking usher, hand them the tix, and enjoy lower bowl seating at 500 level prices.
