BUT, reduced spending is fine and all, just as long as it's done in the right way, i.e. the DoD actually tries to shield readiness, spare parts, maintenance etc. Plenty of actual fat to be cut...much of it on the civilian side.

In fact, a full DoD audit would be nice, Congress actually said one had to be done but the DoD never did it. Congress never followed up, either.

You want us to be at 2% GDP? That's half the DoD budget. Nice try there skippy.

Today's warfare likely won't be fought with brute force numbers. It's going to be small units, precision airstrikes and computer hacking. We might not need to maintain a several hundred thousand strong army.
That being said, one thing Modern Warfare 2 taught me is that when the Russians invade, you MUST DEFEND BURGER TOWN!

~2% of GDP is the minimum amount of defense spending required by each member nation. I never said that ours should be at 2% if GDP (~300 billion dollars.) Just that it could be lower.

Russia/Gazprom has shut off the supply of natural gas to Ukraine after Ukraine refused to pay an 80% price increase. Ukraine had been getting a lower price in exchange for letting Russia use Crimea for its Black Sea Fleet...Russia says that since Crimea now belongs to them, the discount no longer applies. Nice!
