I've met Madlock a few times. He's nice.

He should mix in a salad once in a while.

Madlock is the last great Cubs 3rd baseman.

"great" is a stretch. For everybody in this thread.

I'm comfortable giving Madlock the "great" tag.

Low standards of greatness, I s'pose. He was good. And then he was gone.
GREAT slap-hitter, good eye, wait for his pitch kind of guy.... was he known for being "great" in the field? I honestly don't know?

Bellhorn played a few games at 3B. THAT was the last great Cubs 3B. End of thread.

Bill Madlock won 4 batting titles. Everyone else with over 3 in HOF except Rose.

But not with the Cubs. Different conversation.

Well......he can hit. No question. The whole catching the ball and throwing the ball.......that was an adventure most days.

Dude has amazing offensive numbers. Something like the 2nd most hits of ALL NL players right now? More than David Wright, Chase Utley, all of the Dodgers, etc....? I believe rollins has more. Thats it. But I could be a little off.

He was probably better over there than Madlock.

A brief glance over @ Baseabll Reference at AmRam vs Madlock the Cub gives me the distinct impression that anyone (not directed at you necessarily ... just 'anyone') trying to say Madlock the Cub was notably better than Ramirez has a hell of a pair of rose-colored glasses on.

I'm sure you're right Don, but I never liked Ramirez.

Hell, that's fine. There were, iirc, no shortage of times I thought his dog-ass needed a ballbat across the skull (Ramirez) ... but I suppose one could then say if the numbers are similar with someone who wasn't always trying vs someone who probably was, that probably strengthens the debate for Ramirez being considerably better, which means the short list of great Cubs 3B is pretty clearly goes from Santo directly then to Ramirez, with perhaps an asterisk by Madlock morseso for what he did with the Giants and Pirates, and not entirely for his time here (nice as it was) .... I guess there's Vance Law as well ....

They were both kind of viewed in a similar way as guys who dogged it. And they could both hit.

I thought it was a foregone conclusion that ARam was the best since Santo and PMatt was just being FavreFan-ish. :D

1988 was the first year that I really got into baseball, and although the Cubs were not in any kind of postseason contention, I remember that I was really into the "race for the Team RBI lead" between Vance Law and Andre Dawson....Law really heated up in the 2nd half, and without checking Baseball Reference, I believe that Law jumped ahead of Dawson with one game left to play, and Dawson hit a 2r HR to beat Law 79-78 (and 79 really sucks to lead a team for the whole season, BTW.)

Bill Madlock was great. I'll still never forgive Jim Barr for throwing at him.

I could never fill those shoes.

I just never liked Aram. Seemed to always put up huge numbers when the cubs were long out of it. Plus I always liked Madlock.
