There is nothing you can do about the rooftop situation. You and everyone else involved knows it. That was all bluster with absolutely no backing. Good job by Gordon Witmeyer for identifying the used car salesman as the fraud that he is.

Old Gordo did a good job as well highlighting that the Cubs earmarked funds for litigation prior to public entitlements being in place. They knew they weren't going to pursue the "alternative revenue streams" for several years down the line. I wonder if Emmanuel and Tunney will read that and understand they were lied to.

Remember when good dolphin told you before the season that the litigation was a red herring on the delay of improvements? Well, it looks like an internal memo was leaked to Gordon essentially saying the same thing.

Build and dare a judge to make you tear it down...unless you don't have the money to build.

Bud Selig said he believes the replay system Major League Baseball put in this year to enable managers to challenge umpire calls is working.

"It's done great," he said. "I don't think it's been a can of worms at all. I think for something new it's been unbelievably good."

Selig also was asked what, if anything, MLB is doing to speed up the pace of games. The Cubs and Reds played a 3-hour, 50-game Sunday.

"We're doing all right," he said. "Actually, we were under 3 hours average time last week. We've had a lot of 2-hour-40, 2-hour, 45-minute games. People talk about that, but in the last 10 years, baseball attendance has been the greatest in our history.

"It's not the time of the games as much as the pace. Yes, we are working on it."

I couldn't believe Pat Hughes was so blatant in a$$ kissing yesterday, "everyone is going to miss you Bud." Oh God, that was awful radio.

I imagine Bruce Levine will make him look like a rookie in the ass kissing league when he gets on the radio for his show Sunday. Bruce likes nothing more than a tongue bathing of Bud's brown star on a normal day. Imagine what it will be like when he has direct access to him for a few hours.

I'm sure people will miss him on a personal level. Everyone who interacts with him only has kind things to say. Seems to be a good guy, and was actually a pretty driven owner when he ran the Brewers. It's only in his capacity as commissioner that he's agreed to be a dicksmack, and we all know who pulls the strings when it comes to that capacity.

The one thing Bud should be working on is his replacement. Oh, I forgot, that's not his job either.

Bud is done in many aspects of life. Saw him yesterday, I think the public image of his mental state is better than reality right now.

Growing up, I was lead to believe that the commissioner was some kind of third party caretaker of The Game who was incorruptible from the interests or owners and players. It sure seemed that way from Landis all the way through Giamatti. Bud really opened my eyes that the commissioner is actually the hammer of the owners against the players by means of some faux corporate hierarchy.

That was definitely the case. The Commissioner's interest was the game itself rather than the owners or the players. When the owners had most of the power. But with the rise of the Player's Union and Marvin Miller, the balance between labor and management swung hard the other way. In effect, the players had their own "commissioner" in Miller so the owners had to have one of their own.

If it's a question of money, he did his job. But the things he has allowed and bought to the game makes him among the worst in any sport as an overlord.

all star game effecting the playoffs, replay. ignoring the steroids era, then pimping it to bring your game back, then riding in on the white horse like a hero to "clean it up" should have him banned from the HOF. but as we know, money is the only thing that counts..

like I said, killing a season with no playoffs, and then "fix" things by inviting steroids into the game.

I think the elimination of the Leagues' Presidents also plays a factor.

He did the smart thing and capitalized on the Steroid Era and made changes when it became unpopular with fans. No commissioner in their right mind would try to eliminate something that was making the game popular coming off a very unpopular lock out.

It only became unpopular when he & the owners started throwing players under the bus.

Bud Selig was the first commissioner to represent not the best interests of the game but of ownership. Prior to him the commissioner was considered to be the caretaker of the sport, maintaining its integrity and fostering its growth. Baseball's owners canned Selig's predecessor and stuck in one of their own as commissioner. The NFL has since followed suit, although not going to the extent of putting in a team owner as commissioner.

When you consider that the sport went from an era of collusion, to cancelling the world series, to indulging in the juiced era of steroids, Selig is worthy of whatever praise as he did what he was told to do and the sport has not completely died (although the game today with replays is no longer compelling).

G. Wittenmyer is accessible on Twitter and email, and it is through him that I've come to appreciate how the rooftops are a strawman/bogeyman argument. Joe Ricketts wants to make money, needs to make money, and winning or renovations don't make quick money. The Cubs will start selling their star prospects before they commit to fielding a competitive team, its just too financially tempting not to follow through.

We both know that no commissioner will admit something like that. We can think what he did was wrong (I don't) but I think we all know that any commissioner would have done the same thing if they were in the same situation. He wasn't the most polished guy when it came to explaining things and that probably caused him to take a few PR hits.
