What is it called when it is the tie-less suit? I mean, it was a suit...but without the tie I'm hesitant to call it that. He had everything else going...stark white dress shirt, watch that would cost me a month's gross salary, etc.

A lot of folks refer to that as business casual. However, there is much confusion over the topic, and I typically think of business casual as button down shirt but no sport coat. When you say business casual, you'll even get guys in polo shirts.

It still amazes me that noted workers rights advocate JORR doesn't realize that any non-casual dress code is a way for the elites to control the working man.

Non-casual dress should be for weddings, funerals, and graduations only. You know, actual important events and not coming in to do a powerpoint presentation on industry trends.

If that Powerpoint presentation isn't important, why are we doing it? There is appropriate dress for every occasion. I don't want my banker wearing khakis and a polo shirt. I don't want my mechanic wearing a tie. I'm sorry you only dress up for dead people and future divorcees.

The powerpoint presentation probably isn't that important. There are probably three other things just as important that week. Weddings, funerals, and graduations aren't something you go to very often. You can dress up for that. Dressing up to sit at a computer for 8.5 hours(with a 30 minute paid lunch and a 30 minute unpaid lunch) is unnecessary.
Why does it matter though? It's all just arbitrary. Is the transaction any different if your banker has on a polo shirt? You still get the money or put the money in the fake bank vault in a computer. I've never gone to the bank and been like "Wow, the fact that the person behind the counter was wearing a shirt that buttoned all the way down certainly enhanced this transaction".

That is a fair point. However, it does have a few differences. The first being that the elites really couldn't get away with an executive dress code that is less strict. They also may be dealing with customers more often, which seems to be the last line of "You have to dress like Don Draper" because that customer demands that you look a certain way.

It's a little different when someone who is making sure that payroll gets sent to the processor is told what to wear. It has to do with how workplaces were pretty much designed to put workers in a certain mindset and control them during the hours they are there to work. There is a fair amount of subtle soul crushing and turning people into drones when it comes to the American workplace. Forcing them to be in uncomfortable clothes is just one way to help accomplish that. That is why the concept of casual Friday is so funny. On Friday, we can somehow accomplish the goals for the day while not wearing a shirt and tie or a sportcoat! However, the business could not survive if we let people do that on Thursday. Thank you executives! I only have to spend 4/5 days of the week wearing uncomfortable clothing that I can't wait to change out of when I get home! I'm sure my productivity wearing a tie goes up by 7.2% though!

Well, that lets my company off the hook as we have customers popping in and they walk thru the whole office. So even, Goggles in the back with the other accounting nerds need to dress up.



Im gonna sound like Scorehead here, but I dont think that's necessarily a bad thing. You should have some control over those you pay.

Ill tell you what. I never really feel bad for guys in shirts and ties or suits. I feel pretty terrible for teh ridiculous costumes people are made to wear in other industries though. The movie theater that forces the workers to wear a fucking bowtie comes to mind. Or the fast food worker in a tie.

I think the expectations of customers are changing though. Hopefully the days are ending where a customer cancels a multimillion dollar deal because they saw a guy in khakis in the break room when they are getting the tour. HOW CAN WE DO BUSINESS WITH A COMPANY LIKE THAT!
Workers, in general, keep on getting screwed. They'll still have control if they allow them to be more comfortable.

I dont really mind either way. Im not gonna take my business elsewhere if my banker wears a polo, but I dont mind wearing a tie either.
