I always thought James J. Bullock was funny on Too Close For Comfort when I watched it as a kid. I had no idea he was FUNNY.

I don't see why. WAR is a fine statistic but Abreu has 12 homers and 35 RBI. Rizzo has 6 and 16. Rizzo is sporting a great OBP and very respectable numbers but why even take the bait when Abreu is destroying the earth?

If anything I think this shows the fundamental flaw in advanced stats. Abreu has had a much better season to date.

Anthony Rizzo April 2013:

BA: .224
OBP: .315
SLG: .531
HR: 8
RBI: 20

Anthony Rizzo April 2014:

BA: .283
OBP: .407
SLG: .457
HR: 4
RBI: 12

I'll take the 2014 version thank you very much. 2013 doesn't look much different than Abreu's April.

What bit? I've seen Adam Dunn for the past 3 years and Rizzo's last year. I'm not a fan that type of approach.

Yeah, and then Bernstein goes on to talk about all the stuff Rizzo has done for his charity.

he did say that had nothing to do with the baseball issues as well.

considering BrIck has gone to Rizzos charities as the out on this one, I think that confirms that neither is "Far Superior" to the other and Steve Stone is wrong for upteenth time since his semi retirement has kicked in and he hasnt seen another MLB baseball game, other than the ones he broadcasts....or whatever he and Hawk do.

TY Brick for resolving this issue

If you had listened to the whole thing, Bernstein basically also said that Rizzo having better numbers is basically a fluke due to a very low BABIP for Abreu.

I guess we'll see what happens. I assume that you think that Rizzo is going to be at least equal to Abreu at the end of the year?

No measureables for Flukes and neither is "Far Superior" than the other.

Oh, I think someone here will remember it each time Abreu hits a HR. Any guesses who that might be?

Abreau 0.7

While everyone debates which statistics matter most, this comparison suffers from a thin data set. I am sure time will reveal which one is better.

I think this pretty much sums up the debate. 145 plate appearances is not enough to make any meaningful comparison -- he's only faced 64 pitchers at this point in his MLB career and probably played in what, 12 ballparks or so?

I understand why people lean towards Abreu. Homeruns are great and everyone lives power but I try to look at it in a few different ways

One guy makes outs 68% of the time, the other guy makes outs 58% of the time. That is a HUGE advantage for Rizzo and it shouldn't be dismissed.

Rizzos ability to get in base has been pretty ridiculous. OBP is as important if not more important than slugging when it comes to scoring runs

Add the fact that Rizzo is a very good defensive first baseman and its closer than you think

This whole conversation reminds me of the Buehrle game vs. Wood game discussion that comes up every so often around here.

If Rizzo was on the Sox and Abreu on the Cubs, suddenly WAR would be more important on the South Side and vice versa.

Part of what makes things interesting around here.

Look on the bright side. It appears that maybe both teams have pretty solid guys at an important position for the foreseeable future.

I havent looked deep enough into the numbers. I should have checked BAPIP

But, as he is prone to do, Bernstein is misrepresenting BAPIP. Not everyone normalizes to .300 Miguel Cabrera is like .346 for his career and Rizzo ended last season at .246

Abreu has probably been better, but its not as big a difference as it seems.
