Like many of the married people here, both my wife and I have full time jobs and are raising a child. For those of you who both work and have kids, when the hell do you find time for the mundane stuff that has to be done around the house? Laundry, dusting, cleaning, keeping things fairly tidy. Do you write out a schedule what gets done by whom on what days? Im not usually home until after 7 , wife between 5 and 6. After getting dinner ready, eaten, cleared away , rogue jr into bath and bed its usually after 8 so not a lot gets done during the week. Weekends ( I work every other one with few exceptions) we try and designate as family time so we are usually finding fun / constructive things to do as a family. That doesn't leave a whole lot of time for house upkeep and while we don't do a bad job but its usually fairly messy around the house. How do the rest of you handle this stuff?

I am not married but even chasing around with my son playing sports I go thru a lot of the same things. You do what you can and prioitize. Laundry to me is the most important and you can throw a load inreal quick and move on to something else. Trust me us and a whole lot of other people go thru this same thing, I just don't let it drive me crazy, because it can.

honestly with 4 kids and 2 adults working full time there is very little time to get stuff done around the house. So for the most part our house is trashed most of the time. When we do have a Saturday or Sunday with not much to do we will often do a mass cleaning. It will stay that way for about 10 mins and then back to trashed.

It used to drive me crazy. But I have learned to just let it be. I would rather be doing other things with my kids than cleaning and organizing.

I usually do the groceries and cleaning on Sunday mornings - that's when I have the most "down" time. I try to get the house picked up every night after the kids go to bed. I do the lawn whenever I possibly can, which usually isn't often enough in the spring time.

My wife does the laundry because doing laundry sucks ass.

I try to declutter the living room every night before bed. As far as actually cleaning, that happens when one of us gets grossed out by something... A spaghetti sauce spot on the stove and havent had spaghetti since the weekend, that type of thing

With the twins crawling around and chewing on everything in sight, we have been much more diligent about cleaning. Once we trust that they wont choke to death on things we will probably go back to our old ways.

Create a routine and become very efficient at it. It's something I've had to do living alone with 3 kids. I never have to clean their rooms or sweep the kitchen but right now I'm responsible for everything else. It's not difficult but it requires some discipline.

We thought about budgeting for maybe a once a month cleaning but we're too embarrassed that by the time she would come in every month the place would be too messy and we'd be mortified at having someone see it in that condition

My lady friend has been trying to talk me into hiring a babysitter and have someone come out and clean once a week. I don't feel comfortable with a stranger having access to any part of my house so it will ever happen. Being poor only makes it less likely.

My wife is an at home mom. The kids are 12 and 13. They go to private school (i.e. no busing). That is the background.

Anything inside the house is pretty much the wife's territory. The only exception is I fix anything that breaks and I do my own laundry. I also manage all the money and bills as it makes sense to have a CPA doing that.

Anything outside the house is pretty much mine, mainly cutting the lawn and fixing stuff.

She drives and picks the kids up from school. We split the driving around for sports. We split the dog walking and clean up.

problems you have with a regular maid:

1. the night before/day she or he or it comes, you end up running around trying to make sure there's no loose drugs/porn/runaway teenagers lying about and stashing your checkbook/bank statements out of sight.

2. even tho the maid's coming to clean, you end up pre-cleaning so that she doesn't think you're a slob.

3. if you're not there when she comes, say you're at work all day, you'll come home to find every tv tuned to either a polish and spanish language channel (depending on the maid service you go with) with the FUCKING VOLUME CRANKED ALL THE WAY UP and your liquor bottles slightly less full than they were before (esp with the polish maids) and bags of chips/cookies/snacks emptier than they were before. Oh yeah, and all that annoying loose change you have on counters and dressers and coffee tables? they make it disappear.

4. Don't leave your toothbrush out.

Found that instead of a regular maid, having a maid service send over a couple of girls every 3 weeks or monthly on a Saturday to do a deep clean works pretty well. you'll clean before they come and they'll do all the rigorous floor/commode/shower scrubbing you really don't want to do.

 I believe that I only had 2 kids then and even if I didn't none had made 4 yet. Things were so much cheaper then.

Growing up, once a week we had a cleaning lady and my mom would be a wreck the night before making sure we cleaned up before the cleaning lady would arrive.

When I was married my wife did the laundry and I folded. We had a cleaning lady every other week. I did
everything else from taking dogs out to all the work outside. Now that I am single it is all me but I just
live in a small house so it takes 10 minutes to vacuum the whole thing. Takes 20 minutes to mow the
lawn and weed wack. My biggest pain is cleaning the wood floors which cover 3/4 of the house but I
only do that every 6 weeks or so. It isn't that difficult for me not having any kids. The dog has his
own challenges but generally is pretty easy.

As a single parent, it works out well for me.

Tidy up every day before I have my daughter

Deep clean every other saturday morning before I pick her up

In between I let it go knowing Im always only a day away at most from cleaning.

BadRogue, have you and your wife considered a cocaine habit? You can clean the house at night and still have 7 hours to spare

Buy a farm or chinese restaurant and the kids starting paying off at around age 12-- you'll get 6 years+ of free labor out of em.

I cant imagine it getting worse, between diapers and formula I'm already at the end of my rope. I know there will be one shot big expenses like sports and activities but the day to day costs have to go down... Right?? RIGHT?!?!?!

Because you like things cleaned a certain way and women are only programmed to do things how they want to do them?
