This.

Of course it helps that I have two sons. They're basically slobs, but they often want friends/teammates over to hang on weekends. Friends (& now a girlfriend) will inspire them to clean up (properly) at least once a week. That, and they know that if it gets to a point where I'M complaining, they'd better get to the gettin'. Figure that in for once or twice a week as well. Have I mentioned I'm pretty good at yelling?

It also doesn't hurt that I don't have to worry about putting on a $5000 suit each day anymore & actually have a half hour or so in the morning where I can help pick crap up. But really, when I can finally not have a house with pets, then I'll consider an actual "clean" house.

Nothing better than when your son not only how knows to do laundry, but he appreciates the gallon sized bottle of Shout for the white uniforms.

On a different note, I too really thought that once my kids were out of day care, I could start pocketing at least some of that preschool money. Stupid me.

Hopefully he's out of vacation time and he's due back at the bridge harassing billy goats.

I can’t believe that modern technology has not addressed this problem. If only there was some type of machine that would do this task for you. If only…

Is there a folding/putting away machine that I'm not aware of?
Taking the dirty clothes, putting them in the machine and then switching machines takes grand total of 60 seconds.

For the nit-pickers in this thread: Folding and putting away laundry sucks ass. That's the only job (outside of kid stuff) that my wife takes care of. Thank god for that - I'd be wearing the same clothes for months without her.

Laundry is the most passive of all chores. I've never minded it. Sorting/folding can be done while watching sports. SPORTS, spanky! Even the rolled-up socks can turn into an impromptu game of pop-a-shot with the laundry basket.

Nope. When finished cleaning/vacuuming/dusting - you can sit back, relax, and actually see what you've accomplished. There it is: a clean house, fresh vacuum lines, clean surfaces.

You finish with 4 loads of laundry and you really haven't accomplished anything. Little kids clothes are the worst: You can fit 30 pairs of socks, 30 underwear, a dozen pants, a dozen shirts and a couple sweatshirts in one load and still have room for a couple towels. That shit takes a half hour to fold afterward.

Girlfriend and I have been living together for about 6 months...this is how it's worked out thus far...

We each do our own laundry.
She does the majority of the cleaning (and when I clean, she usually goes back over it anyways)
I do the majority of the cooking and grocery shopping (when it's her turn to cook, we usually end up ordering something out)

It works. House is usually cluttered but not terrible. Basically if she had her way it would be cleaned every day and if I had my way it would only be cleaned when people were coming over...it's probably closer to my way.

15? I suspect he is coming home and blowing loads, not throwing them.

wife takes care of the kids, does the laundry, makes dinner, sort of tidies the house. I go to work and post on message boards all day.

Even with having 3 kids under 12 our house is clean. My son missing most of the toilet on a daily basis is my only minor complaint. I swear removing the stress and annoyance of a live in relationship has made just about everything seem easier.

 This thread has been funny and encouraging to me.

Anyone else's kids break out this line when cleaning commences, "Who is coming over?"

My wife is not a neat freak by any stretch and is fine letting things go. It took me a long time to get used to it because my mom was OCD about stuff and could not stand to have anything dirty around. She would check the kitchen sink numerous times each evening and if there was one thing dirty she would wash it. She said she could not go to sleep with dirty dishes in the sink.

And it basically comes down to the fact that if my kids are happy and I am having regular sex then I could care less what the house looks like most days.

No, not was I was meaning. Just saying if I am having sex regularly then I can deal with things that otherwise might frustrate me.

The wife cleans the kitchen and does the dishes, she usually gets pissed at me for not helping out...
Then we go to work(we work together)she does our laundry there and then we go home and the cycle is complete. Circle of life...

I do not think my wife and I could work together.

My mom was like that as well. Wife and I both aren't really go getters as far as the cleaning goes which is why things get out of hand sometimes . She is a far better cleaner than I when she does get around to it but I clean more often and do all the laundry but in all fairness I have more free time than she does so I don't mind doing a bit more. I don't cook at all so that part evens out anyway. It's not a priority on weekends when we are both off because like others have said Id rather spend time together than worrying about housework. I was just finishing up my 6th load of laundry earlier, thats what inspired me to make the thread . Glad others are kinda in the same boat

We/I pick up for 15 minutes every night, usually the kitchen or toy room. Sometimes if we/I are rolling we keep going. I do most of the cleaning/scrubby cleaning when I have time or on weekends. I put away laundry when the kids are getting ready for bed. Toys are pretty much only allowed in their rooms or the toy room. They get resorted and cleaned once a week, usually on a Friday night or Sunday morning. It's mostly my job. My husband is a huge help with picking up not so good on the scrubby stuff. This way rooms like the dining room, our bedroom, guest room, take about 15 minutes to clean at anytime because there isn't crap all over the place.

I clean in stages a lot. Sometimes I say okay just this one room today, that's all I'll do but at least it will be one room. Other times if I notice a bathroom is messy I'll scrub the sink and wipe down the mirror for a couple minutes, then later in the day or the next day come back to it and do the floor and baseboards, then later the tub or shower. Sometimes I spend 5 minutes at a time doing something small before we go somewhere. It ends up making a difference and I don't feel so overwhelmed by it then. I'm also never too tired to do it.

I also always keep the family room clean. No kids toys at the end of the day, no papers, no crap. It always takes about a half hour to clean once a week and if somebody drops by I can lead them into that space and I don't think anybody notices the clutter in the rest of the house. My kitchen is always clean but it's cluttered with kids papers, projects, lists, bags of stuff to return, whatever. I usually scrub it here and there when I'm making dinner.
