It's a very quaint place. The odd thing about your distaste for boring cities is that you don't seem like a party animal or anything. I could understand if you were a Manhattan social lite or big time club hopper, but you post on a message (like me) during Blackhawks games. So not exactly the type that needs a high energy place as a living situation.

It was a terrible, terrible place to grow up. There's the Lake Geneva people visit for the weekend, and there's the Lake Geneva people live in, and rarely do they overlap. To say nothing of the universal distress that comes with leaving the place where all your friends and family are, it meant going to a place where everyone knew everyone and you could never escape them, living with a vast underclass the likes of whom we practically wouldn't be allowed to speak to in the suburbs, and attending a school district that was basically a cruel joke. It was alienating and suffocating. I don't wish living in that place on anyone. Rip me for the little shots I lob at St. Louis, but this is from the heart.

It seemed like there was/is a lot of old money there. My friend's house apparently had servants quarters on the grounds, and I can't remember if his family or his friend's family had them at some point. I remember one time we were having dinner with our friends and during the course of conversation he said "Filipinos make the best servants." because either his or his friend's family had Filipino servants at one time. Our friend Eilene, who was there, and Filipino, was a tad peeved.

They used to make fun of the kids in a nearby rural town, some of whom would drive tractors to school. I think their cheerleaders used to do a "That's alright, that's OK, you'll all work for us someday!" cheer if they were playing them in something and losing.

There was another time when we were walking out of a friend's apartment and a balck woman was walking past us with her child. Joe exclaimed "Oh, n*gger babies are so cute!" and was shocked when our jaws collectively dropped.

CH, first off you are one of my favorite posters. So when I tease you, it's just because I love to see your responses.

That is a sound explanation. I suspect university towns are the same way. I recall that dynamic down at Champaign when I went to school there. More globally, I think any place you grow is like that to an extent. I always thought if you lived in San Diego all the time, it would be boring. What fun is 78 and sunny, when you're in an office. The weather never changes. That seems boring to me. Imagine Hawaii or any vacation spot, same thing. Everyone else is having fun while you're at work and school. I go to Vegas at least twice a year, but I would never live there. It would take away the thrill.

We used to go to some lame resort in Wisconsin for our family vacation. I would hang out in the arcade. One local was in there, and he hated people from IL and called me a "flatlander". I didn't think that was very creative or particularly insulting.

But the locals didn't talk to us. (I never noticed as a kid ) But they must have laughed watching "us" on skis.

They would charge you for horse riding, and the free mini golf course was a joke. The highlight was the family meals. There was not one fun thing to do unless you ponied up cash- arcade, speed boats, etc. You could play basketball on a court with bent rims and old basketballs.

I found Lake Geneva a strange place to visit.

We did the "Look at places the Wrigley Family live in" boat tour, and took a jet ski out on the lake. Then it was like "What do we do now?". It was one of the few vacations where I wasn't really upset when it was over. It was just like "ok, I think I got more than enough of this place. Let's go home".

There is a lot of old money, mostly Chicago families like the Maytags and Wrigleys. But the serious old money is just northwest/southwest of the city proper, along the lakeshore. That's either the Town of Geneva or the Town of Linn, depending on whether you're north or south of the lake, and they'll fight any incorporation with the actual City of Lake Geneva if it kills them. They may as well be back in Chicago (and probably are most days) for all the contact they make with the day-to-day lives of the normal people. They sure as shit don't attend Lake Geneva schools. The best we got in that department were the nouveau-riche punks in the McMansions east of town, and even some of them bolted for the Catholic school in Woodstock. You see them and their private airstrip as you're taking 12 up to town.

One of my favorite bits of Lake Geneva quaintness was the all-out war the city waged for years against Home Depot, who wanted to build a store outside of town at the main exit off 12. The rationale for fighting it, at least in public, was that it would destroy the "gateway to Lake Geneva" and turn us into Chicago's northernmost suburb. The "gateway," which is to say the plot of land they were to build on, was some overgrown grass and a broken Citgo sign. It was across from a really shitty Wal-Mart, even by Wal-Mart standards, and an out-of-business gas station. So there's your gateway. Home Depot finally got it built after agreeing to add some foofy architectural flourishes so no one would mistake it for a Home Depot in Vernon Hills, but like three out of eight aldermen resigned over it. There's now a new Walgreens, a Target, and a Best Buy next door, plus the shitty Wal-Mart has become a Super Wal-Mart. There goes the neighborhood.
