Guys who close successful cash cow businesses to "do something else" is Gods way of saying they have too much money.

Chickie's on 33rd and Pulaski is pretty righteous...

Never had it, probably never will.

Is it really all that difficult to make a fucking hotdog anyway? boiled or steamed, doesn't really matter. grilled, always nice...
but once you load it up with onions and mustard and relish oh my!...that's all you really taste.

I don't know, but his fries aren't particularly good and I can't tell a noticeable difference between the duck fries and the regular ones except that they cost twice as much. Gene & Jude's or Jimmy's fries are far, far superior. Just like Abreu.

If the youngest is with me when I have stuff in the area, will pick Jimmy's over almost anything.

I'm so proud

i know what you mean. how great can a hot dog be? and do we as a society need to be fawning over something like a hot dog as cuisine?

that's my thing about voodoo donuts in portland. ha ha, it's a pennis donut. it's still a donut! i needed to wait in line with hipsters and unicyclists for an hour for this?

My trip there was around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. No wait, and the donuts were fresh.

Mr. Pickles (used to post on this board) makes a good dawg but he opened his shops in Cali (likes the weather better, he says.)

It's almost impossible to find a hot dog downtown. I can think of two places. You can get a falafel on every block though.

U.B. Dogs. My guy! He does want to have a conversation with you in Doug-like fashion but at least his line isn't out the door.

The Skyride Tap used to have decent ones.

They stopped serving food though.

There's a place called Westminster on Wells and Madison that sounds similar to Hot Doug's:

http://www.westminsterhotdog.com/index.html

Yeah, it's pretty good. Franks & Dawgs on Clybourn is good too. Doug doesn't have a monopoly on "gourmet" hot dogs. He's got a cult of personality.

I think Westminster is a very poor attempt to cash in on the gourmet dog idea. Their fries are so terrible. Frozen crinkle cuts. UB Dogs is a million times better. I go there and Max's on Adams.

I like the kid at UB Dogs, but he's always so goddamn cheerful. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for chitchat. Especially if the Sox lost to the Cubs the night before.

You know, Neil Steinberg took a shot at him in his book, You Were Never In Chicago. Neil still misses Harry. Neil was angry because he offered to write about UB Dogs but the kid (is his name Joey?) never called him. I emailed Steinberg and told him the kid probably didn't want to impose, probably didn't really think he was serious, and that he serves a good dog, runs a good shop, and Neil should give him a chance.

Neil Steinberg is the walking example of why I don't want to read/listen to the screechings of a dry columnist. He really needs to have a drink and mellow the hell out. He isn't a Chicagoan in my book anyway.

I certainly don't want to hear pretentious stories about him discussing English lit or chamber music with his kids either.

I don't begrudge the man his sobriety, but I find people who get fucked up to be far more interesting than teetotalers. The good stuff is on the margins. Neil is no longer a marginal man. He's like every other starched shirt in Northbrook.

I don't know if you've read that book, but we're pretty much hitting its subject matter. It's about his embrace of Chicago and his belief in tit for tat, who you know, pretty much an acceptance of the "Chicago Way". As a lifelong Chicagoan, it's something I find abhorrent because it has nothing to do with merit. I'm sure Neil would say, "that's life".

As for his kids, I agree. Everyone's kid is a fuckin' genius. A friend of mine that I grew up with is a true genius, the smartest guy I ever met. He pretty much invented black box trading when he was down in Champaign. Anyway, I don't talk to him much now, but I'm still really good friends with his sister. When his sister's kid was about a year old, he was able to mtach a shape in the correct hole. She called their mom and was very proud, as this was relatively young to be able to do such a thing. Their mother said, "Yeah, I think your brother Tommy could do that at three months."

We used to go there all the time and it never crossed my mind to eat any food there. Haven't been in there for years and it's a block away from where I work...

I used to get pizza in the back of Alcocks bar. That and a soda. I don't want the soda. Same price. That I felt shitty after eating. must have been the gluten.

Some co-workers went to Westminster today and asked for a menu to take back to the office, and were told not to bother as they are going out of business. I guess they couldn't handle the competition from Cafecito next door.

I love Cafecito, but the crowds at that place are crazy. It's good, but not worth standing around for 20 minutes. Shit man, what $ value do these people put on their time?

My sister-in-law is very competitive with her kid and mine. My boy is 3 months older than hers and quite a bit taller so I don't know if she's compensating for that by always taking shots at my son's intelligence as compared to her son's. Alphabet, numbers, reading,iPad expertise, these are things she brings up that he does better than my son in a passive aggressive way. It pisses my wife off to no end but I try and tell her to relax .Anyone that compares 4 1/2 year olds is sick in the fucking head. 2 of the more noted zingers during their Easter weekend stay at my house was " Cameron is more sure footed than you ( he is a bit of a klutz) but you're more clever than he is" also "We always know when we go to Aunt Kelly's its going to be lots of sugar and TV" . Like we just let our son watch TV and pump him full of sweets 7 days a week. I try and be rational about it, I think my boy is pretty smart but certainly don't think he's Jason Bernstein by any stretch. The hardest my SiL laughed when they were here was when she was bragging about something her son was doing better than mine and I told her the world needs ditch diggers too. She thought that was hysterical.
