I love Jack White.

I'm not going to see a rock show at Chicago Theater because I'm not 70.

It's the second time he has pulled this shit in the past decade in Chicago.

I've only heard this song a couple times, but I couldn't get into it.

Yeah, it just kinda goes. I find Jack White and the White Stripes both to be aggressively mediocre, for lack of a better adverb-adjective pairing.

Jack White is one of the best songwriters of the last......20-25 years, IMO.
He's got some clunkers, but he is prolific and he's got some that are absolutely perfect.

I could do without the 4-5 "collaborations" he does every year, but again, he is nothing if not prolific.

The hits are all good, but nothing I'd listen to off the radio. Same with the Black Keys (hey lolol u herd the 1 about how the black keys and white stripes should merge into a supergroup called "piano"?). I guess I just get worn out when people talk about him Saving Rock And Roll or whatever. It never needed saving. I feel the same way about the Strokes, even if "Last Nite" is a pretty good song.

I've never heard anybody say he "saved R&R", but then again, nobody has ever "saved" R&R. Not in my world, at least.

He gets how to tug on heartstrings, play to simple love interests, express everyday angst, etc. I mean lyrically, he is a good songwriter. And he clearly knows how to craft a catchy riff. What's not to like?

White Stripes are showing themselves as stronger than the Black Keys, even with their non-existance. I'm not a fan of the Black Keys adding a 3rd/4th/5th (essentially) permanent member. The were good as a duo: catchy, raw, soulful...... now they are dangerously close to a band my wife will hear every morning on Eric & Kathy. The White Stripes were great even though Meg was a total hack - and Jack didn't mind that. He almost fed off of that fact in concert...

That's a terrible thought. Jack White is a rock star, not because he tries to be, but because he can't fucking help it. He can write any kind of song and he understands more about sound and tone than just about anyone. I'm not really a guy who argues about who the "best" guitarists are, but the sound of Jack's White's guitar is perfect.

Great rock and roll is about straining against one's own limitations. That's what the White Stripes were all about. It's a framework set up with purposeful limitations (Meg's drumming), designed to see how far they could go within that paradigm. That's why the White Stripes wouldn't have been "better" with Jimmy Chamberlain on drums. That's why Joe Satriani sucks.

I'm not really on top of my game today for posting purposes, so I was glad to see Spanky and JORR convey my feelings about Jack White.

Seriously, I'm tired.

Best acoustics I've ever heard is there. Saw Jethro Tull there twice with my Dad in the early 2000's. I would imagine with his sound that sort of venue would really add something special.

Nope.

The only place more uninteresting to see a performance might be an arena.

I didn't say it was interesting, I just said the sound was terrific.

The last Black Keys album was awful. After Brothers, which I would consider a masterpiece, I'm not really sure what they were going for with El Camino. The new Black Keys single is pretty bad too, but I caught a few other tracks from the album, and ending up pulling the trigger on buying it. It's very mellow, but a much better listen than anything that was on El Camino.

This was actually on WYCC last night (Comcast 239). The guy just brings it--the set with the chick band is particularly good. Then there are excerpts from an interview at the end that is like something out of Spinal Tap. He's all that's left.

Turn Blue is my favorite track so far, after a couple play-throughs.

Brothers was amazing, and because of that it will be hard to match.

Some friends of mine had a band called Cash Money back in the 90s. They had to change the name to Cash Audio because of the rapper. The drummer, Scott Giampino used to fry bacon during their live performances. Anyway, if you ever saw them or heard them, you would think the Black Keys were a tribute to them.

Yes, I can see that. I think I hear guitar and drums, and the vocals may be amplified by way of microphone.

It is uncanny.

Place with the best sound that I've been to is City Winery. Fantastic sound - but I'm not in a hurry to get back there either, for the same reason I don't want to see a show at Chicago Theater.

Lincoln Hall has the best sound I've encountered by far in Chicago. Very awesome place to catch a show.
