So much fucking WRONG in this thread

The Chicago Theater is fine for a Rock show. Whats the problem? Too clean?

Jack White is awesome by ANY measure

The Black Keys are the best rock band of this generation and no one else is close.

The Strokes are good and they are better than Wilco

This.

It's the second time he has pulled this shit in the past decade in Chicago.
Best acoustics I've ever heard is there.

+1.

Best acoustics I've ever heard is there. Saw Jethro Tull there twice with my Dad in the early 2000's. I would imagine with his sound that sort of venue would really add something special.

Nope.

The only place more uninteresting to see a performance might be an arena.

Uninteresting?

Are you there for the music or not?

Spanky's thoughts might not be the same as my own, but I just think venues like that are just not good for rock shows. I think the seated venues just take something away from the concert experience. Not to mention the idiots that yell at you to sit down at shows there.

This pretty much sums it up.
I can sit down and watch a concert on TV. From my couch. Without the cost. I don't want my rock and roll mixing with "Wicked" or "Rent" in any way.
Stand up, get sweaty, fight for space - that's rock and roll.

Everybody is better than Wilco. Way to go out on a limb.

I went to one show there and it was not only awesome, but it was pretty much a free for all. No one could possilby ask anyone to sit down because everybody was standing going crazy

I guess that's the power of Oasis.

Same thing when I saw the Rhythm Devils there in '06.

I have a fairly unhealthy obsession with ripping Wilco

Whenever I hear anyone who likes Wilco rip another band it activates

I saw Arcade Fire there and had a great time. I've found the Park West to have the best sound.

The Black Keys doing a barbershop quartet version of The Perculator would be better than every Vampire Weekend album ever

Wouldn't that mean you'd have to clone Auerbach and that McLovin-looking shitbag of a "Drummer"?
I don't think the world could handle TWO Patrick Carneys.
 :puker:

I would mostly agree with this.

Raconteurs didn't really do much for me though.

Thank you, it had to be said. Without Jack White, the Black Keys don't exist. Think of Jack White as Ed Lynch and Auerbach as Bruce Levine. No wait, Jack White is Bruce Levine and Auerbach is Ed Lynch. Or no,

Didn't spend a lot of time w/ his last release, but I'm definitely a fan.

There is a lot wrong in this post too. I will respond to your statements in the order they were presented:

The Chicago Theater isn't a rock venue. It does sound good as Frank said, but I'm with spanky on this one. It's for old folks. Sort of like FitzGerald's.

I agree on Jack White.

The Black Keys are an ordinary two piece rock band like many others. When they were at their best they were no better than the aforementioned Cash Audio (Cash Money) or Left Lane Cruiser. There are many more bands very similar to them. As for their recent foray into lite rock, I don't want to discuss it.

In no world are the Strokes better than Wilco. And I'm far from a Wilco fan. "Last Night" is better than any Wilco song just like "Go All The Way" is better than any Zeppelin song, but I would never say the Strokes were better than Wilco anymore than I would say the Raspberries were better than Zeppelin. In fact, the Strokes are just Vampire Weekend with better taste in music. I don't like my rock played by trust fund kids. Or Oberlin students.

The sound is good, if the band is on its awesome. And its not like I'm saying its the best place to see a concert just that its perfectly acceptable. Not everything is Red Rocks or Phyllis'

The Black Keys sound like Jimi. Nothing recent sounds better

The Strokes first album is perfect. Juuuust right for who they are. Last Night s maybe the 5th best song. But my point was just to rip Wilco

As for trust fund kids or who you want playing your music I couldn't disagree more. Every type of person on this crazy ass planet has a story to tell and can be interesting/inspiring.

Some fortunate sons are super talented intelligent socially conscious people. Some are heroin addicts. Both are capable of great music

Ive said this a lot but Xrt made me hate Wilco....and that awful movie

Wilco is superb and I'll hear nothing to the contrary. "Jesus, Etc" is better than any White Stripes song, but not conducive to chanting at soccer games. "Impossible Germany" is a masterpiece. "One Sunday Morning" is another.

I've never claimed to be a badass.

the two bands don't belong in the same argument. they're not in the same genre. what in the everloving fuck.

i don't have much use for wilco after "yankee hotel foxtrot" but i think that was because i think they're like the wes anderson of alt country...look at me, i'm like bill simmons, making funny pop culture cross references. can i be on grantland?

They're both rock bands. Julian Casablancas isn't capable of expressing emotional depth the way Tweedy can. If you strip away all the pretentious bullshit of Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche, Tweedy is a songwriter on par with someone like Jackson Browne.

I dunno, are you talking about Cline's playing, or him personally?
I don't see any pretense in this:

I could listen to him wax poetic all day, but only if he was buying the rounds.

It is literally impossible to hate on Peelander-Z. Creates a discordance in the space-time continuum or something.
