Barry is good in small doses.

However, despite the dislike on this board, no one replaces Terry very well.

when barry was giving us his REAL LIFE GREG MADDUX STORIES i couldn't help but be reminded of an old stern show shuffle bit i heard the other night when howard was bagging on domonic barbera for running around the scores stripclub namedropping howard as much as he could.

he didn't try to hook his sons up with howard's daughters, per say, but he did shoot for howard's niece.

call it a hunch that barry's kids might not grow up to write the definitive starling castro biography to end all starlin castrp biographies, but they could end up getting shacked up with someone tangentially related to either sandberg or maddux =D

Rozner's [dumb guy voice]Why do you hate _____?[/dumb guy voice] should be put on the back burner for a while.

Bernsie, or any host, using the dumb guy voice when acknowledging a valid opinion that happens to differ from his own to dismiss it out of hand should be permanently put on the back burner. It's a cheap and easy out, though, so it's right in Dan's wheelhouse.

Agree about this dumb guy voice thing. After the 1:00 hour, I was ready for his mic to be turned off. When these 2 get together, it's really bad, Either Dan tries to talk more hockey, or they continue the dumb guy voice every segment.

I thought it was a very good show. I particularly liked the Jeff Passan stuff, because I've been banging that sports-TV-bubble stuff for months if not years. I didn't realize how bad this Dodgers thing is.

Hi, Beary

I heard a portion of the show from about 5:35 to 4:45 that was pretty funny. Barry was talking about not having anyone at home to talk to about his golf game. Dan said he needs a "Wilson." Barry said he has one and talks to about it the problems he's having with his loft wedge (or something like that), and then Dan said it's going to kill itself by rolling onto a letter opener.

And then they went to Laurence and I drove into a playground full of Asian children.

Has anyone mentioned Marshall's Leery accent yet?

The exciting thing is, we're gonna retire a Beer.

Why was he referring to himself in first-person plural through that whole thing? I never heard it in context.

Rozner's meat ball voice had a little Peter Brady voice change in it.

I didn't listen much today, but holy hell, every time I did, I heard his meatball voice. It's awful. Agree with the earlier posts about Rozner being good in small doses. He beats the "joke" to death, every damn time.

It all began with the Padres deal which was then used as a benchmark for teams in larger markets. There were already problems with subscribers not wanting to pay the high cable price for San Diego baseball. Now the disaster with the Dodgers. The writing has been on the wall for awhile now. But Ricketts is still counting on a similar type deal.

It's one thing for corporations to carry the freight for a big league ballclub. But to dump that on Joe Sixpack isn't going to work for long. You can see the growing reluctance of the big guys to toss their cash around in the inability of the White Sox to obtain sponsorship for the restaurant or the Home Plate Club. I don't think that's just a Sox joke. It's symptomatic of a larger storm that's brewing.

During the boom times of the late 90s/early 2000s MLB set up a model that is going to be difficult for most teams to sustain. They've gotten themselves into a position where each team needs to draw 2 million+ fans each year and have a huge local television contract just to survive. I believe that's untenable.

Or putting it more simply....

The MLB set up a model that states that teams can do well if they have an inexhaustible well of money. The TV contract nonsense will fizzle out and then what?

I've already grown tired of hearing, "Well, sign him to 150mil p/yr contract! Who cares, did you see what that TV deal is worth?!?!?!?!"

For all the talk about the Cubs TV deal 50 million isn't the disaster the media makes it out to be. Of course the Cubs get the same rights fee as the White Sox even though I'd wager the Sox draw lower ratings. The fangraphs writer though mistakenly adds the Bulls stake in the Sox's equity stake.

You mean the media acting as if the Cubs are giving away the product for free?

Well, I think that's based upon the Padres deal. If they're worth $60 million, what might the Cubs be worth? That completely ignores the fact that that deal was a horrible mistake that has almost crashed the cable company.

And this gets back around to my thoughts on Wrigley Field. The Cubs have something nobody else has. And instead of making the most of that, they would rather tinker with it in an effort to have what everyone else has. As long as they can keep Wrigley standing, they've got a built-in advantage over every other team. I wouldn't be so quick to toss that away chasing ad money that might turn out to be very fickle.

There is a new standard in tv money with the Dodgers deal. We all thought the new Dodgers' ownership group was crazy for what they paid for that team, but then they struck a monumental tv rights deal and proceeded to outspend everyone. The Cubs are one of the few teams that have a pseudo national following. They should be able to extract a huge price for their tv rights, which were always internally subsidized by the Tribune Company.

JORR correctly points out that Wrigley Field is another huge advantage.

The whole package is going to come together someday, and it will be glorious. If you think the Blackhawks or six championship Bulls were a thing, a Cubs World Series will be heaven on earth.

Which is going to make it really funny-sad when they take their games off a national cable channel and put them on a startup RSN that won't even be picked up in all of Chicagoland.

Signing a rich RSN deal blacking out 70% of the Chicago TV market and all of the national market would slowly dissolve that following and erode their Chicago foothold.

yeah, but he is a north shore guy. That is an old man look with the stark white shoes and unfaded blue jeans. There might have been a brief time where The Boss made the jean jacket a good look but not THAT jean jacket.

I felt the Cubs made a big mistake with moving the games off WGN and with WGN outside Chicago being a different channel (WGN America). They eventually will regret that because the Superstation concept built a large national following. I heard that MLB wanted the Braves and Cubs to stop giving away their product as part of the effort to sell the MLB package. In any case, I am sure Chicago viewers will have ready access to the Cubs.

Do you think the Yankees would feel that they were getting a good return on their investment if Tanaka was pitching well but not winning games?

They did. Dumb move on their part. I have a funny feeling that the benefits of giving people lots of basic-cable baseball outweigh the Everything that doesn't get Monetized. I know I enjoyed watching the occasional Atlanta Braves game on an idle summer day. It's like I was saying in one of the NHL threads about how MLB is only now relaxing about games on youtube. Same principle.

You sure about that? You don't see Comcast shutting them out for, well, leaving Comcast?

Tastes and technology change are another factor that has to be accounted for. Most of us now use the DVR to time-shift our viewing and the ability to watch on non-TV devices or with special apparatus (i.e., AppleTV, roku) means that those who want to pay to watch will be willing to pay, those that don't want to pay will watch/do something else.

What's interesting is how when people are severed from programs their interests wander elsewhere. Having gone through the experience of a World Series being cancelled my interest cooled to having to watch a World Series (ironically, the idea of not being able to watch the series 7 years earlier prompted me to go out and buy another TV so I could watch uninterrupted). My daughter's TV going dark in NYC has prompted her to completely re-evaluate the value of cable (she now piggybacks on other people's dime).
