While true, I don't think this is the precedent they fear. I think it is more about bad, though not illegal, speech resulting in forfeiture of property.

Lawyer: Mr. Reindsorf, I have here an affidavit from a former caddy at your country club. Can you please explain to the court the meaning of the term "Goy bastards"?

BINGO...and on and on and on!

I hate to defend the guy, but the NBA seems to be grasping in its charges against Sterling. From the Trib:

"One of the six counts issued Monday accuses the Sterling-led Clippers organization of "destroying evidence relating to the recording"

"It also says there is ample evidence that Sterling and his wife are not estranged, as has been suggested."

"Sterling and others in the Clippers organization knew about the recording even earlier and made attempts to prevent it from becoming public."

Well, no shit...if someone made a recording of a private conversation of mine that was embarrassing, I think I'd try to have it destroyed too. It's not as if a crime was committed and there was a duty to preserve evidence.

From the conversations I've had in the barbershop and outside of it you may not be in the minority. A lot of people have a problem with what the NBA is doing to him.

i kind of feel like silver is now having to sell this to the other owners now that the dust has settled. what dirt does sterling know about the other owners and what skeletons do they all have in their closets.

This vote is going to make Silver look like an idiot. The owners arent going to do this because they dont want to be the next victim after they say something stupid.

Disagree.

I think they have to vote Yes. The backlash by the union, fans, and media for not doing it will just make them all look worse.

If for some reason they don't vote yes, he should be fired immediately for his handling of this.

I know but that is on Silver for putting them in this position. I think a group of them needs to get out in front of it and say they cant vote to take someone's property away from them just because he said something ignorant. Players say and do stupid shit all the time. No one is voiding their contracts and taking their homes. If they vote yes I hope Sterling comes out and says "Do you think I only recorded the Stiviano phone calls? Get ready to hear some interesting shit."

I would say the way he has presented this and if he doesn't have the vote, yes.

They aren't taking his home. They are forcing him to sell. He will get his $1B for his team and leave. It's not like they are taking the team and leaving him with nothing.

They are more firing him and giving him a severance package which is the value of his team.

Yeah, that's a good point. I still dont see how the owners agree to it. Any one of them could be next. It's nice to get all that cash but it's the principle of the matter.

I think that notion is perilously close to being comfortably tossed onto the 'bullshit' pile.

I think they'll ultimately pull off the coup, but it sounds like the observers who know more about this stuff than I do aren't quite as convinced that this will be as open-and-shut as it first seemed.

It really surprises me the owners including Sterling and a lot of really smart lawyers did not get in a room and have it arranged before the presser how this would end.

You don't think the Union, which is made up of a large majority of African Americans won't have anything to say if the owners don't oust Sterling?

I'm not sure what they can do other than bitch a lot, since most CBAs prohibit labor stoppages from either side.

Yeah I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with Don here. We live in a reactionary culture, as this very case demonstrated.

I think another and possibly more crucial point of view from the owners' perspectives is that post-audio tape Sterling is simply not good for business. Obviously you'd like to think the anti Sterling stance is based on other principles, but I think a bit of cynicism here is warranted

At the very least, I could see a situation where players boycott certain teams if their owner votes a certain way on this.

Sterling is toast.

Cuban may be the lone vote against booting him.

No other owner has the balls to take a stand and the cost-benefit analysis is such that there is little to gain by backing Sterling's rights so you'd have to a non-conformist type like Cuban to try to make a point given the potential public backlash.

They are taking billions from his family. He doesn't want to sell the team. In 10 years this team could be worth close to $3B. It's wrong to take a business and future earnings because of something that was said in private.

Talk is cheap. The players can flap their gums all they want. Call me when they all stop playing until he's gone; at that point I'll reconsider tossing it into the 'bullshit' pile. Until then, it's into the "wheel barrel" and on it's way to the aforementioned pile.

To FF's point ... 'reactionary' doesn't have any meaning ... every time someone farts someone else reacts ... doesn't mean anything is accomplished ... activity is not accomplishment ... LeBron saying something like "I think he's a racist pig fucker" then waltzing out to the court to drop 40 on someone is the same as him saying "fuck it, I'm rich bitch" and then going out on the court to drop 40 on someone.

The owners agree to it - probably unanimously.

It is all about image and reputation. Sterling tarnished his...or what little he even had. No other owners want to put themselves into that position.

I think a lot of you guys aren't thinking about the NBA and sports leagues in general in the correct terms. They are much more like private clubs that can restrict or grant ownership based on the criteria they see fit. Even if you had $5 billion sitting in the bank, the NBA could deny you the right to purchase a team even from a willing owner. They can all collectively purchase another team and take control of it. It's an association of people who then own teams. It's more like a license than anything. The only thing that binds them together is the fact they are binded together. This isn't some guy who started a shoe company being forced to sell the company he started. This is a guy who was granted a team by others and he agreed to all of the language that does that.

He'll get a nice payday. His kids will all be rich for generations and invest in more profitable industries(probably more housing) and everyone will be fine.

The other owners can complain about the precedent this sets, but the precedent was always there. Look no further than how MLB shuts out Cuban from ownership. If you can keep someone out like that, then you can certainly remove someone like that. The only political power there is a strong resistance from other owners. When someone is threatening Jerry Reinsdorf for removal from the NBA, then all Jerry has to say is "Ok, I'm taking 10 other teams with me and we are forming the JNBA" and that is it. Sterling has none of that power because he messed it up with 50 years of open racism.

Now, we also see why Sterling had so many "friends" in the league. You need friends because sports team ownership is basically like Game Of Thrones(Bill Simmons mode activated!) where your protection is simply by being connected well with others. Sterling broke all those connections.

Oh ... a lawyer signed a contract ... well, that clears everything up ... contracts are iron-clad and never challenged ... that'll make Beth Murphy's day to hear that ......

He'll challenge, and likely lose, like most people do when they challenge a contract.

The Cubs will challenge the contract and lose too, but that will just result in them paying damages.
