This is a typical Bernstein train of thought. He seriously thinks that Ricketts didn't have lawyers look at the contract simply because... I don't know - the Cubs didn't float it to the press? Of course he had lawyers tear apart the contract. I'm sure the rooftop owners did the same. But the Cubs aren't going to announce that they did that because it's such standard practice that it doesn't need to be announced and it would be bad PR. The Cubs have to maintain the image that they are trying to work with the rooftop owners even if they aren't. I thought the attorney/PR expert/doctor/basketball player/major league hitter himself would understand that. He takes public comments literally. Isn't he smarter than that?

FWIW, I couldn't care less who wins, but it's just stupid to assume that a major league owner wouldn't have attorneys look at a contract that he is in a battle over.

Also, listening to bernstein makes me want to pull for the rooftop owners even though I think most of them are douchebags. What is bernstein's interest here? Why is he so much of a champion for the Ricketts family? He doesn't have the Don Tiny/CoF argument since he isn't a Cub fan. So what's his angle other than hoping for a rich guy to get get richer? Does he hate zoning regulations? Like dolphin said, if the guy next door to him wanted to build something ridiculous, I highly doubt he would go to bat for the guy's variance based on the philosophy of a property owner being able to do whatever he wants.
