Microsoft is ending their support of XP this spring. I really like Windows 7. But it's almost 5 years old. I think even the federal government is still using XP. If there was a Windows 9 that was like a Windows 7 I think it would be perfectly useable.

Like i said, if you have anything resembling a semi-functioning brain you should be able to use Win 8.1

Windows 8 is quite stable as well so it's already better than ME.

I can use it just fine.
It just sucks.

If so, I'm sorry that I think this product sucks.

@ work we had just switched from XP to 7 late last year.

IDK why Microsoft was so quick to get off of 7 into 8. 7 is pretty fantastic.

We just need to get past this block. I think it sucks, like most people. You, like very few people, want to make love to a crappy OS.

I just think that the OS should, largely, be invisible. You really shouldn't notice your OS. It should be app driven. 8.1 just says LOOK AT ME OH MY GAWK I TAKE GESTURES THAT DON'T WORK ON MOST LAPTOPS

I think Windows 7 will be around for awhile because unless Windows 9 is more usable I doubt any businesses are going to convert all their computers to Windows 8. I like Windows 7 a lot. I think Windows 7 is like an improved version of Vista.

On an unrelated note I still use Microsoft 2003. I've used a couple of the other versions of Word, but they moved all the menus around on me. So I decided it's not worth it to learn a whole new set of menus just because they want to change everything every couple years. The only thing that is annoying with Microsoft 2003 is dealing with the docx files.

But check this out...

Microsoft plans to end support for Windows XP on April 8, but there are still many users whose computers run the outdated software. That's why the company has asked tech-savvy users to encourage their friends to upgrade their computers or buy new ones.

In a recent blog post, the Redmond, Wash., company said readers of its Windows blog are likely running a more modern version of the operating system, but their friends and family may not be.

"We need your help spreading the word to ensure people are safe and secure on modern up-to-date PCs," Microsoft said in its blog
.

No. Fuck you. XP was awesome. I miss it. I was told I just needed time to get used to 8. But I've had time and I still fucking hate it. I can't stand it. It sucks. Microsoft really fucked the pooch with Windows 8. And I bet they know it.

Damn you for dropping support of 13 year old tech. RAGE!!!

:P

Agree completely. 7 is great. I have no desire to try out 8.

whats the big difference between windows 8.1 and windows 7? Once you hide metro and install classic start menu are they not the same thing? i just built a new pc and went with windows 8.1. so far so good. i use windows 7 at work and really dont see that much a difference between the two

I don't know. Haven't used 8 so I'm not sure if the classic start menu solves the issues with 8.

Well, it is an improved version of Vista.

And I don't even like what MS did with 8, I think it was too forced for the desktop concerning the auto-boot to Metro and ditching of the Start menu, it still works but it is a bit disjointed at times. They forced it into a "one size fits all" to link up with the mobile/tablet platforms. I hope they just do a bespoke platform that fits each device class with a common theme across the board. I do love it on Windows Phone, easy, light and fast...they are already merging it with RT (because RT doesn't need to exist) so it's a step in the right direction.

That said, I think MS nails Threshold.

Aside from having to click the desktop app which is now included in the security/update I see no difference at all and it is stable as shit. It is a little odd to have to find some things but change is inevitable.

If you're dumb, yes, that's exactly what it feels like. But if you can't use Windows 8 I'd assume you'd have trouble with boiling some water or tying your shoes.

Will you stop with the "dumb" please?
I can use it just fine.

It's just a lousy OS. It's really not a laptop os... It's designed for tablets and it shows.

I already agreed with you on that.

I also have it on my laptop and it took some getting used to but it's fine now. You click on icons and type stuff, it works. I like the split screen stuff, most of the gestures are alright...although it pisses me off when they pop up and you don't want them too. The "snap" stuff is cool. All in all, I don't know what the hubub is about. It's not mindblowing but it isn't terrible. It's stable and quick with good support. It just kind of "is."

There is plenty of good stuff to be had but the decision to completely unify it on touch platforms and marry that to the PC desktop was a mistake, one that will be remedied with Threshold. At least I hope so, I'm not moving to 8.1 on my desktop and will keep my Win 7 Pro until the next iteration.

It sucks.

So do you work for Microsoft or something? You're taking the fact that 8 sucks very personally.

Big thumbs up on this nomination.

I got a new computer a couple weeks back, and dealing with this windows 8 shit is a pain in the ass.

I got a laptop a few months back, it has Windows 8.

It's fine.

You gotta be a fucking invalid to get "stumped" by the evil Windows 8.

My problems are more Windows related in general, rather than just Windows 8 specifically. The "Apps" are kinda stupid, and I just boot directly to my desktop.

I had a Mac Mini before, which was hooked up to my LCD TV in my living room. I used it mostly for just streaming shit, music, surfing web, whatever. It was connected with HDMI, and I never had a single setup issue with anything.

The Mac crapped out on me a few weeks ago, and I didn't feel like dropping the coin to get another Mac, so I bought a small Dell that was much cheaper. I learned afterwards that Windows is really fucking glitchy when connecting to a large LCD TV with HDMI. Getting the correct resolution was a pain in the ass, and many times when I start up, no video comes through to my TV, or the audio isn't working. I'm about to give up on HDMI, and just connect through the standard computer monitor component cable, which is some bullshit.

Got a laptop with a touchscreen. If you have a touchscreen, it makes Windows 8.1 a lot easier to deal with. Without it, blech.

So I updated my new laptop to Windows 8.1. Everything is working fine until I try to go into the Windows Store app yesterday. The splash screen comes up and it just hangs there. After searching the web, I swear I counted 30 different ways that people try to fix this problem. I've tried most without success. I may actually have to refresh the whole PC just so that Store works again. Really frustrating.

with my company, I shouldn't have to worry about Windows 8 until 2019 or so.
