The Sox are short there, no doubt. If they win in '59 and either '83 or '94, they're right where they should be. But I guess it depends on one's perspective. My friend in Boston has a 13 year old kid. In his world the Red Sox dominate the Yankees. Maybe we're in the Red Sox Century, but I'd bet against it.

The Yankees have won 1 WS title this century. You want the Sox to win 2 more before you die and you think Cub fans are too optimisty?

I've seen your pic, Joe.....the Sox need to get to work.

I wouldn't be too disappointed with the Sox winning 2 WS titles over the next 20-25 years. That puts Joe Orr around 95. He might live to see that second one ;)

They've squandered two in my lifetime where they were probably the best team. At this point, I'd be happy with one more.

Close (even when its the Yankees in front of you) only counts in horseshoes

Cubs could have easily (meaning it was very possible) won in 69, 84,(I understand how good Det was but that's what everyone thought of Bal in 69) and 03. Probably 08 too.

Who really squandered them?

11 Rangers
02 Giants
88 As (questionable but I think if Eck throws the slider 4 inches further outside and its an As sweep)
86 Red Sox
85 Cards

Those are the ones that had no business losing since I was born

Right. So I've scaled down my expectations from four to two. '83 and '94 were two the Sox should have had. I think a consensus among experts would have the Sox as the best team in baseball each of those years. I don't believe the Cubs have ever had the best team in baseball during my lifetime. The '84 team was really fucking good, but Detroit that year had an all-time kind of team. Ironically, the '03 Cubs were definitely the best team in the game at the end of the season, but we all know what happened there and no one wants to talk about that.

It's going to be hard to get to 10 more with the current attendance situation. Kenny Williams knew that.

'84 Cubs would have beaten Detroit. They were still living off a ridiculous April/May start. They were ripe for a pickin'.

Too bad San Diego did their pickin' early.

Okay. I guess we'll never know, but I think it's pretty silly to say a team that won 104 games, swept a good Royals team, and then rolled over the team that took out the Cubs was "ripe for a pickin'". You Cub fans don't limit your hope to the future. You have hope for the past too.

94 Expos were better than the Sox

You could argue that, but I don't think most baseball people would agree. I'm not sure the Expos were better than the Indians that season.

But it is just not clear cut that the Sox were the best team in baseball in 83 and 94.

The Orioles in 83 and Expos in 94 were just as good if not better.

I don't really think they were as good or better. But the point is, it doesn't matter. The Sox didn't get it done in two years where I think they should have and you admit they could have. We can't go back. I don't expect them to win three in a row to make up for it.

From June 1 of that year, which was about 2 weeks before the Cubs got Sutcliffe if I remember, the Cubs were 69-45 and the Tigers were 67-49. The Cubs were the best team in baseball in October 1984 and they shit the bed. It's not hope. It's disappointment.

This is ridiculous

In 83 The White Sox won 1 more game than the O's. Then the O's beat them 3-1. So they had a better record after 166 games.

In 94 Montreal was 7 games better than the Sox when they went on strike

In 2008 the Cubs led the NL in wins and were three behind the Angels who played in a weak division (2nd place team won 79)

So you've convinced yourself that the Sox were just victims of being behind the Yankees in the 60's and that the Sox have left 2 World Series titles on the table and in the same thread you try and say Cub fans are unrealistic.

Come on

Id start my argument with the fact that the Expos were winning at a .649 clip and that three teams had better records than the White Sox

So, what are the new ETAs on the Fab Four?

Bryant- June 2015
Baez- late 2015 or start of 2016
Soler-June 2016
Almora- June 2017

Bryant and Baez will be here this September. Soler and Almora will never make it. Hopefully they are traded before they kill all of their value.

Baez will be here this season.

Bryant will be sometime in middle 2015.

Almora is probably 2016 or 2017.

No idea about Soler. There may be no room for him if the Cubs move Bryant to the outfield.

Did they play the same teams?

I'm telling you that baseball experts considered the '83 Sox and the '94 Sox the best in baseball and the '84 Tigers far better than the '84 Cubs, regardless of their respective records against varied competition. I'll go with those experts over a couple Cub fans on a message board.
