The CHICAGO TRIBUNE's ED SHERMAN is reporting that the CHICAGO CUBS are close to announcing a new radio deal to leave longtime flagship TRIBUNE News-Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO to move to crosstown CBS RADIO News WBBM-A for the 2015 season. SHERMAN reports that the team and WBBM are "ironing out final details, and WGN is not expected to match WBBM's offer."
Meanwhile, CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS is reporting that WGN is continuing to negotiate with the CUBS; its sister national cable network WGN AMERICA is dropping CUBS, BULLS, and WHITE SOX telecasts as part of its conversion from a partial "superstation" simulcast of CW affiliate WGN-TV/CHICAGO to a standard cable network. WGN-TV remains in the running for the local broadcast television rights.

Everything special about the Cubs is being ruined.

There's enough time between mound visits to fit that in.

Good.

Fuck the Cubs.

No, taking the money makes sense. That is a big step in becoming a market competitive team. They had been plagued with a corporate tv/radio contract that undervalued the product.

BR, that "fat" observation is evidence that you're sober. Get on with it. A warm Saturday is a terrible thing to waste.

Denis is right. The Cubs have been fucked under that WGN shit forever long as Tribune owned both. Now they get market value.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the work of ratings juggernaut Bob Sirrott?

What is the deal with that show, anyway? Maryanne Murciano has lived here for 25 years, and was a newscaster. The whole "banter" schtick sounds like a nerdy guy explaining the nuances of chicago politics, sports, and culture to a mail order bride.

It's meant to be cute radio. I get my fill of that during the week listening to Eric and Kathy 4 hours a day

It sucks. Replace Bob Sirrott with sinicalypse, keep Maryanne. That's appointment radio.

With Extension 720 gone, Garry and Brandmeier banished to the margins of Chicago radio, and Nick Digilio having done every possible "what was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon" show, what is there to listen to on WGN but the Cubs and Hawks? WGN needs to bid on the Cubs like their station depends on it, which it does. Fucking John Williams back again, he's, as bigfan once described Hub, "low-fat soft-serve vanilla ice cream in a safety cone with extra napkins."

So the deal is that the Cubs will only be on 780 while news programming continues on 105.9, unless the Bears are on, in which case they get 780 and the Cubs get kicked to 105.9. So if you were hoping that you'd get to turn your dial to Rod Zimmerman's cost-cutting move and hear the Cubs lose 100 games in crystal-clear FM audio, you're generally out of luck, and if you were hoping you'd get to hear the Cubs from far away while there's a Bears game on, I guess you're out of luck there, too.

Again, my objection to this isn't so much about the sentimentality of the Cubs and WGN (though of course it still is a part) so much as it's a poor allocation of resources across the Chicago radio dial. First of all, I hate that a decent FM signal in this market is being wasted on an AM simulcast. Commercial news radio doesn't need to be on FM (though NPR benefits from it for reasons I'm not going to argue until pressed), and it shouldn't be relegated to little old WCKG while the Cubs are on. Radio isn't like digital cable where your magic box finds the program you're searching for (and even then, witness this board's bitching about Hawks games getting kicked to CNBC). If you want news radio, you put on 780. You're probably old, so now you get angry and confused. All the while, WGN is left with nothing but the Blackhawks because their talk radio is run-out-the-door-with-your-hair-on-fire bad. It's just bad for the landscape.
