WASHINGTON (AP) -- The only American solider held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is back in U.S. custody after nearly five years of captivity, U.S. officials said Saturday.
The officials said the Taliban agreed to turn over Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for the release of five Afghan detainees from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The transfers happened after a week of intense negotiations mediated by the government of Qatar, which will take custody of the Afghans.

btw, if anyone wonders the real reason why we're in afghanistan it's quite simple.... after the caspian sea, long thought to be a veritable goldmine of a giant oil reserve, was showed to not be the honeypot/moneypot everyone thought it was, there was still an impetus to get into afghanistan and take over the country so western businesses could get in there.... you know why?

i read somehwere that as of a few years ago they estimated there was ~1 trillion dollars worth of unmined lithium in the caves of afghanistan. why is lithium so important? lithium ion batteries.... you know, the rechargeable batteries for your cellphones, laptops, tablets, etc.... there's 1tril worth of lithium out there to be mined and turned into electronics batteries which = HUGE $$$$$$ for our corporate masters.

ergo, we have to go to afghanistan in the name of "fighting terrorism" aka "saving the world" and rah rah rah, and i'm sure it's only a nice byproduct that while the military just happens to be there holding down afghanistan all these western companies/contractors can come in and safely mine the lithium in all these caves.... you know, it's not like america would start a bullshit war over a nebulous concept like terrorism just so these western companies can go rake in a trillion worth of product that they turn around and make giant profits off of when they sell lithium-ion batteries on the open market, eh?

nope. it's all about protecting us from those evil jihadists so we're free. so next time you're at a sporting event and they do the thing where they trot out a soldier for a standing ovation.... you best get up and take off your hat and applaud that mofo because if not for him you might have to have about 6 nine volt batteries rigged up to power your cellphone for an hour..... oh and without them those ragtag jihadists would be assaulting the american mainland. obviously.

It's a great story and I'm sure his family is thrilled but there were a lot of other Americans who have lose their lives because of our position of not negotiating with terrorist.

Sini it's almost always about money.

This is really just more bad negotiating by the Obama administration. 5 terrorists for 1 of ours?

Should we have let them capture a few more soldiers so that we needed to get more back?

Or should we be sending them "soldiers to be named later."?

I would have offered 1 for 1, and then maybe up the offer to 1.5.

I would have offered them the ability to breathe for him. If I were him I would be happy and pissed. This is a deal that could have been made years ago. Knowing how great of a negotiator the president is they probably offered to return him to us for free and tell us where some high ranking terrorists leaders were and he refused the intelligence and insisted they take back 5 terrorists.

We probably won't know for decades but I would be shocked if we didn't get things that can't be reported.

He's just trying to be fiscally responsible and cut costs where he can.

A POW shouldn't have to pay any tax (other than sales tax, for simplicity's sake) the rest of their natural lives.

I would hope he doesn't have to pay for anything for the rest of his life. I can only imagine what he's had to go through for 5 years.

There was a mention in one of the stories that the soldier may have been AWOL when he was captured and there's a chance he could be prosecuted when he gets back to the U.S. That would be a strange twist if true.

I saw that too. Maybe they want to clean out Gitmo by any means necessary.

After 5 years in captivity he's having trouble speaking English. He's going to have a very long recovery.

This story doesn't really give me the it's going to have a happy ending feeling. I don't think those parents are really getting their son back.

I completely agree
While saying they celebrate Bergdahl's release, McKeon and Inhofe warned that the exchange "may have consequences for the rest of our forces and all Americans."

"Our terrorist adversaries now have a strong incentive to capture Americans. That incentive will put our forces in Afghanistan and around the world at even greater risk," they said.

I don't agree. They already have all the incentive they need. Maybe if President Obama's administration stopped murdering people(sorry guys but there's no other way to describe it unless you accept the even more reprehensible term of 'collateral damage') then they would have an incentive to stop.

How about we start being the change we want to see in the world. Maybe when we stop murdering their women and children they will stop murdering ours. We've had the same foreign policy regardless of political party for decades now. Maybe we start changing shit and we will be received differently. President Obama is a complete fucking asshole because he campaigned against all this shit and then doubled down on it when he got elected. Fuck him, he's a fucking terrible president and even worse human being. And George Bush, Cheney, Boehner, and all the rest of the D's and R's can go to hell too

They don't even have enough blankets?

we also would've accepted 'what time are they onstage at this year's Pitchfork?'
