How do you define success?

I dunno man, being able to pay off all monthly bills on time and still be able to put $$ away.

I guess I'm not successful then.

older couple in 50's : that sucks.

obviously a one off case but i was like, "man going on a vacation like that when you are 30 doesn't sound as amazing as when you are retired"

Of course, they thought walking around the city exploring sucked. They're over 50. All their questions involved sitting.

This fall I'm going to Munich for Oktoberfest. I'll make sure to cancel as I don't possess an AARP card.

that part about the one off case must of gotten by you. we took a trip to england and did some amazing things cost be damned before we had kids. this couple just always happened to bring up how they were going on trips and we'd be unable to because we had kids.

i'm 34. anything that involves sitting generally sounds amazing. as a matter of fact, whenever my wife has some cockamamie plans, i am always ok as long as there is somewhere i can sit. you want to pick blueberries? will there be somewhere i can sit? you want to go to try on shoes all afternoon? will there be somewhere i can sit?

My wife and I didn't have our first kid until our late 30s and had our second kid a few years after that.

While it's true that I don't have as much energy as I did in my 20s, I know I'm a better parent now than I would have been during my younger days, just as I am a better teacher today than when I was a graduate student. Experience and knowledge may not be synonymous with wisdom, but they certainly are important components of it.

RReader, if you're reading this, did you hear about the 7 people shot at the laundromat on 79th and Marquette? I used to wash clothes there every now and then when I lived that way. They had free dryers, which was always a thing.

Actually heard the shots(But for that, it was actually a relatively quiet night & the sound carried well). Didn't pay them much attention & virtually never go within 3-4 blocks of that immediate area. It was hell when I was a yout (early 80's) and has only gotten worse. The only time that area was "quiet" was when the CPD actually gave a damn and left a squad car there all night. Thanks Mayor Daley

But I thought they had a laundry room in your old building...free dryers were THAT big a deal?!?

It's funny, my sons hear all(most) of my stories of the pre-children era prior to 30....and now neither of them want to have kids of their own until at least that age if not later.

I just turned 38 and have never been close to having kids. The girl I was dating has kids and so I figured
that was probably the closest I would ever get. I really think it is probably too late to have my own now
but if I was ever to "marry into" a family maybe that wouldn't be too bad if there is a good family dynamic
between the kids mom and dad. At this point in my life I'd like to keep plugging away at work and maybe
be able to retire a little early.

Oh wow...well glad you and yours are good man.

Yeah, both of my South Shore high rises had washers and dryers, but I was lazy and would let them pile up to a point where it was best to knock it out in one sitting  Yeah man those free dryers are crazy, especially on weekends. You gotta be a dryer hawk or else you will miss your chance! So nice to have a place now with in unit washer/dryer.
