Hey, where'd you teach your 5th grade basketball summer camp pal?

Encourage them to do things they find fun. There is not a single sporting event in their lives that will matter up until the Varsity or equivalent in high school, and even that is questionable at best. You can be on a traveling team that wins the national championship and it doesn't matter.

I quit baseball and soccer because I didn't like it all that much. I liked basketball but I was pretty horrible at it. Eventually, I got pretty good because I wanted to play and I enjoyed it. The biggest mistake parents make is caring how good or bad their kid is at a sport at the pre-high school level. It really doesn't matter. You want the kid to have fun and enjoy it.

To save the "You don't have kids, what do you know?" I probably have more experience working summer basketball camps for kids than you do, so "You never taught the game at the 5th grade level, what do you know?"

Any other suggestions from the Genius with no kids?

It's ok for you to say you want to be your kids best friend. If I say I want to be your kids best friend it is "creepy".

Encourage kids to play as many sports as possible if they like athletics. The dumbest thing parents do is have kids "specialize". Play other sports and in turn work out different muscle groups in your body. Also as time goes on you may end up being really good at something else.

It's interesting how many top jr high kids never amount to more than average varsity athletes. Mostly because those top jr high kids simply hit their growth spurt quicker.

About the only time I interfered in my kid's sporting pursuits was with my daughters. When little they almost wanted to do that cheerleading shit. I said no way. My kids play and do things not cheer for others doing things.

Very solid words of advice here, in my opinion.

I played baseball and soccer but enjoyed spending time with my family alot more. i'd rather have played yard games in the back yard with my brothers and parents most nights than go to soccer/baseball practice. i was pretty good as i had one of the birthdays that allowed me to play really an age down. this was done purposely by little league to take advantage. we couldn't afford to do any other sports. it got to the point where if there was a tournament 1 weekend that there was some family event going on, i'd rather skip the tourney.

my parents allowed me to pursue what i wanted to do and tried to put money into it if i was serious. i'm the only one of my brothers who pursued sports.
