The reach of WGN 720 and the superstation is a big reason for the Cubs having such a large following. As they move away from 720 and previously having moved away from having all games on the superstation, they are going to hurt their long term fan base. However, the Tribune company was a net negative for the Cubs business operations as it undervalued the tv rights, and thus depriving the club of a revenue stream.

720 wanted out as Matt said. It is time to break the cord.

I disagree. It isn't 1990. The era of the superstation is over, and every team has a large local television deal.

I'd say except for the NFL, it is hard for any baseball team these days to grow their fan base outside of their local region. Keeping fans is easy though...with streamed games and such that are not blacked out.

We've got Homeland Season 4 being played out in real life by POTUS and Co. and people are (Bernstein loud talking voice) WORRIED ABOUT WHICH RADIO STAION THE CUBS ARE ON.........

If you are a Cubs fan who's actually complaining about this you really are an idiot that must just complain for the sake of having nothing better to talk about.

If WSCR "loses" the Sox the Cubs could go to WSCR............lol.
If it's up to WSCR to place a bid for the SOX I'm guessing they start at 10 bucks a game and pray the Sox say no.

So this is the last year the Cubs fans will be able to whine about 670 being WSOX

Yeah, CBS could mandate more Brand Synergy between the Cubs and all CBS Radio stations, including WSCR being more on the Cubs' dicks than they already are. The thing is, B&B don't root for the Cubs like they root for the Sox. They're Sox fans, but they're also fans of commerce that involves the Cubs. Now I guess I see why.

As for Homeland season 4 in real life, I don't know what that means, because my tolerance for nauseating camera work ended after The Blair Witch Project, but hey, I'm a radio geek. I romanticize the business. I want there to be a few constants in this dying star of an industry, and now we lost one. And if WGN thinks they're losing money on the Cubs now, wait until they see their billing with nothing to sell in afternoons but Bob Sirott talking about hot dogs every fucking day.

Why do so many site say that the Cubs have been on WGN radio for 90+ yrars, the Cubs where broadcast on WIND for years ending after the 1056 season. Bert Wilson, Jack Quinnlan, & Milo Hamilton were among the play by play men,

Did I miss something? Did 670 announce some program changes? They are now going to have a Cubs weekly show? A Cubs pre-game show? Broadcast Cubs games? And have a Cubs post-game show?

So I guess I'm answering your question with a "NO". :P

What are all those suck ass lifers at WGN who were encouraged to be all Cubbie all they time going to do now? Kaplan's entire view of himself is based on being a Cub ALSer and WGN employee.

i dont see where them changing radio stations makes one bit of difference to a listener. who cares what station it is on as long as it is powerful enough to cover the area? the new york yankees were on WABC radio for years and years and years before they eventually ended up on WFAN and nobody cares that they arent on WABC radio anymore. in a couple years nobody is going to care that the cubs arent on WGN anymore. its the same with wrigley field and all the hand-wringing over updating it or heaven forbid replacing it because of "tradition". if the yankees can blow up yankee stadium and rebuild it (a couple of times in my lifetime) i have no problem with blowing up a place with a sick history of losing like wrigley field entirely and building a new ballpark and starting over.

im all for killing all of the old traditions linked with years and years of losing. fuck WGN.

I lived much of my life hearing about how "special" the Cubs were. So, the next time you question the loss of these traditions, ask yourself what makes the Cubs any different than the other teams in baseball now and how much of that stuff is on the chopping block too.

I understand it is easy to say "Just win. I don't care about traditions" but I doubt most of you chose to be Cubs fans because of the product on the field.

the thing that pops into my mind and probably a large number of peoples minds when they think Cubs across the country is losing, not ivy and "take me out to the ball game". maybe locally its wrigley field and its loser traditions nobody wants to change, but nationally the cubs are a laughing stock. why would everyone be in love with traditions that all are linked to chronic losing?

Did you become a Cubs fan because you loved losing?

no, i became a fan of the team because they are relatively local to me, they are in the national league, and when i came into this area it was very affordable for me to go to the games. sure, i like wrigley field as much as the next guy but not to the point that i dont think they should ever try to build something new and comfortable and better.

I find it hard to believe that the gameday experience and other traditions didn't factor in. I'm a life long Sox fan and I've always found the Cubs gameday experience to be pretty cool.

as i said, i like wrigley. i have high hopes for the renovation project. but ive been in a dozen other ballparks that are equally as great to watch a game in, and several that i liked a lot better. i have no attachment to WGN radio, all i need to know is what frequency to tune into. i dont care who sings the 7th inning stretch. i wouldnt lose any sleep over never seeing a white or a blue flag after a game again. the scoreboard is cool for what it is, but id rather have a kick ass enormous video board up there. its 2014, its not 1945 anymore. everyone got over the adding lights thing just fine.

During this interview, it came out that Steve Cochran offered to take up to a 3% pay cut if it would help keep the Cubs on WGN. Not sure if it was de Castro or Manley who let the cat out of the bag.

Matt, do you guys get the regular WGN television station down there or do you get WGN America?

But the Yankees being on WFAN instead of the Mets does suck.

He will keep the Hawks, Bulls, and Sox together on a regional channel and let the Cubs fill their new network with bad baseball and NU women's lacrosse.

Who chooses their teams?

I was raised to root for local teams. Andre Dawson was great in 87. That's it.

Not the ivy or anything else you deem "special"
