Probably more so than the defending third-worst-team-in-baseball.

If contending means competing for a Wild Card spot then yes the White Sox are contenders.

If contending means having a shot at winning the WS then they are not contenders.

No one is saying the Sox are a favorite to win the World Series, but teams with similar pitching staffs have. You can cover most of the games with three starters. If Danks is sharp like he was against the Yankees and last night, the Sox have a pretty strong three. The point is, if they get in, who knows what might happen.

I don't think the Sox will win the WS this year. But in order to get to the WS you have to make the playoffs. The Sox are contenders to make the playoffs, which gives them at least a chance-- which is a lot better than some other teams-- to win the WS this year.

Cubs are only 7 games out of the WC. A few more games against the Mets, they could be right back in this thing.

They are the worst team in baseball. Only thing they are contending for is the top pick in next year's draft.

Rizzo/Abreu isn't over. It's only been 60 games. Ample time for Abreu to fail and wash out.

Edit: Excuse me. Abreu has participated in only 47.

For the record I don't think the Sox will win the WS this season and the bullpen does stink but the starting rotation has the best ERA (2.09) in baseball since May 20th.

Sox are no more a contender then the Bulls where in the East this year. Enjoy your .500 team. While the Sox are loading up for a "playoff push" the Cubs will be adding depth to a top five minor league system.
