Who chooses their teams?

I was raised to root for local teams. Andre Dawson was great in 87. That's it.

Not the ivy or anything else you deem "special"

So the Cubs and Wrigley aren't "special". Got it.

That seems to be quite a change of course based on my personal experience.

That's fine. Every team has fans raised to love them. (Except the Jacksonville Jaguars.) But why do the Cubs have so many more fans? Or don't they really? It obviously isn't because of anything that has happened on the field.

Because the reception on channel 9 was much better than 44 back in the day.

Obviously, that's part of it. I think if you look back historically, there wasn't all the rancor between Sox and Cub fans like there is now. They were both Chicago teams. Sure you liked one more than the other, usually based on geography. But if you wanted to see NL players, you had to go to Wrigley. And when I was a kid the NL had far more dynamic players than the AL. So when it became so difficult to get a good picture for the Sox on TV it wasn't like treason to slowly begin watching more Cubs the way it would be today.

But that's what BRick is pointing out. More and more Cub advantages are disappearing every day.

Huge Market to begin with gets a Superstation

I think most large fan bases (Stl Cards, Braves etc) all were built on either radio or tv broadcasts that crossed state and team lines.

One big advantage is it seems like Wrigley is a more desired location than Sox Park.

Sure. The Cardinals had the largest market of all with everything south and west of St. Louis. But that's what Brick is saying. The Cubs are purposely giving up the things that made them special. They don't have better TV coverage than anyone else. I kid in Omaha who likes Giancarlo Stanton can see him every night on MLB. And they are probably going to ruin the ballpark. So what do you have left? Hoping that Bryant and Almora are really good. Because if they are, other things don't matter for a little while. But it's hard to be good all the time. Almost no team is.

You were the one that mocked the idea that Wrigley was "special".

This is the problem. Everyone talks about how great Wrigley is until it's inconvenient to a discussion and then all of a sudden they became a fan because they like Player X.

All those attendance championship weren't won because of players.

man, i'm in my early 30s so the cubs have been synonymous with WGN tv/radio since literally the dawn of life (relative to my existence, of course) ---- and it's a damn shame that this ~90yr marriage that even included proper ownership for a good long time is coming to an end because.... uhhh.... theo has a plan! and that plan includes winning the 2017 and 2022 world series "the right way" because they traded samardzija/rizzo/soler/baez for goldschmidt and then signed stanton (the modern equivalent of your 28-29 year old manny ramirez) "when it was time"

so yeah, i guess "that's life in the big city" as my mom used to say..... business is what it is and i reckon at this point WGN sees the ratings tanking and doesn't need any of that annoying baseball-flagship stuff getting in the way of whatever 80s/90s golden age radio legends are coming back to save the station that even randy michaels couldn't kill!

but yeah TL;DR = it's really kind of sad that there isn't going to be a continuation of that baseball/media constant that has been there for 90 damn years.... i mean at what point does WGN realize that the cubs are an indelible foundation of their brand? that perhaps it's something more than $$$ and ratings that compels us to consume their product?

ah well.... i'm sure i'll be eating crow when nick digilio is the far-and-away #1 ratings juggernaught in all the important demos for afternoon drive, eh?

The broadcast rights agreement is part of a multi-year sports and entertainment partnership that also includes several promotional initiatives across all seven of CBS Radio’s local Chicago stations and the company’s digital and social platforms. Additionally, the two parties will work jointly to create and produce live music events to be hosted at Wrigley Field.
CBS Radio Chicago senior vice president Rod Zimmerman called the Cubs “ocean-front property” in radio. “There was no hesitation or doubt in our minds that we were going to go for it and get it,” Zimmerman said of acquiring Cubs broadcasting rights.

If the Cubs got a better offer, why the hell would they re-up with 'GN? Take less money to keep the tradition of WGN/Cubs alive? I'm not sure how this one can even be argued.

agreed. the cubs not being on WGN hurts WGN a hell of a lot more than it is going to hurt the cubs.
